Beidelman’s Hot Hand Lifts Golden Bears over Shippensburg

HTML Box Score

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore Austin Beidelman was perfect from the field on Saturday and tallied a season-high 18 points to help the Kutztown University men's basketball team to a 67-51 victory over Shippensburg University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division contest from Heiges Field House.

Coming off a tough loss on Wednesday at Lock Haven, Kutztown (16-10, 13-7 PSAC E) responded with lock down defense against Shippensburg (12-11, 8-11) and finished plays around the basket. The Golden Bears shot 53.2 percent from the field (25-of-47) while limiting the Raiders to a 32.7 percent clip.

Beidelman reached his season-high 18 points on 7-of-7 shooting, including a 2-for-2 performance from long range. He added three assists and three rebounds in 33 minutes of action.

Josh Johnson finished just short of the double-double with 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Tynell Fortune went 6-of-7 from the free-throw line to round out the double-digit scorers with 11 points. Fortune now has 135 free throws on the season, moving him up to seventh on the KU single-season record books.

Tyler Brooks recorded nine points and two assists while Anthony Selby notched eight points and seven boards.

With 9:54 remaining in the first half, Johnson flushed a two-handed slam to break a 13-13 tie. The Golden Bears never gave up the lead from there on out, and the final margin of +16 was KU's largest lead of the game.

Shippensburg's 51 points is the second lowest total the Golden Bears have surrendered to an opponent this season. The Maroon and Gold won the battles in the post, outrebounding the Raiders 37-24 and outscoring the home team in the paint, 32-24.

Ship's Dylan Edgar fell one rebound short of the double-double with a team-high in points (16) and rebounds (9). Dustin Sleva was hot in the first half with nine points but finished with 11. Abe Massaley and Justin McCarthur tallied seven points each, with Massaley snagging a game-high four steals.

After three games on the road, the Golden Bears will return home to Keystone Arena on Wednesday, Feb. 18 for a PSAC contest with Bloomsburg University. For the final home game of the regular season, KU will celebrate senior day as well as the Play4Kay initiative. The Golden Bears took the first matchup against Bloom this season, 89-85.
