Strong Bench Play Proves Critical for KU in 61-55 Victory over The Sciences

KUTZTOWN, Pa. -  Senior Will Adams (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep (McMurry)) recorded his first career double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds off the bench, propelling the Kutztown University men's basketball team to the home victory, 61-55, in a non-conference matchup with the University of The Sciences inside Keystone Arena.

Kutztown (9-2, 6-2 PSAC) managed to take a 28-26 led into the half despite shooting under 40 percent from the field. It held The Sciences to 28 percent shooting in the first half behind strong defense from senior Anthony Selby (Jersey City, N.J./Williamstown (Burlington County CC)) and junior Josh Johnson (Norristown, Pa./Norristown).

The Golden Bears used a 12-0 run starting at the 7:47 mark in the first half to give themselves a five-point lead with just 30 seconds to go in the half.

"Our defense and bench-play really stepped up in the second half," Adams said. "The message at half was to keep the ball out of the paint and their big guys' hands. That is where they were getting most of their scoring."

KU outscored The Sciences 33-29 in the second half and got great bench production from Adams, Martin Dietrich (Maytown, Pa./Donegal) and Dan Cuevas (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg). The Golden Bears went on an 8-0 run beginning at the 8:15 mark in the half to take a 55-44 lead with five minutes to play.

The Sciences (7-5, 4-1 CACC) fought until the final buzzer, finishing the game on an 11-6 spurt, including a late three-pointer to cut the deficit to six. Kutztown held on for the six-point victory despite the late surge from The Sciences.

Adams recorded season-highs with 17 points and 10 rebounds in 27 minutes off the bench in just his third game of the season. Adams was the lone Golden Bear in double-figures in the contest.

Adams has already made an impact this year after sitting on KU's bench for the last year after transferring.

"It was tough, sitting and watching on the bench while knowing there was nothing I could do to help our team," Adams noted on sitting on the bench the last year before becoming eligible to play earlier this month. "I'm getting old, but this is my opportunity to make an impact.

"I need to be a rebounding guard," Adams noted on his role. "This team went 7-1 without me, so I am just looking to come in and help our team in any way I can."

Redshirt-freshman Anthony Lee (Willow Grove, Pa./Abington) recorded nine points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Johnson scored eight points and blocked two shots. He is 22 points shy of joining the 1,000-point club at Kutztown.

Junior Austin Beidelman (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) posted six points, five rebounds, six assists and two steals in a solid all-around performance. Dietrich recorded seven points and four rebounds off the bench, while Cuevas scored seven points as well. Selby had four rebounds and two blocks.

Kutztown held The Sciences to 35 percent shooting in the game and its bench produced 35 points to just 15 for the visitors.

The Sciences had three players score in double-figures. Sho Da-Silva had a game-high 18 points, five rebounds, three steals and five blocks. Will Gregorits posted 11 points and eight rebounds, while Wes Kerr had 11 points and three steals.

The Golden Bears have won six of their last seven games and head back into Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) competition starting this Sunday, Jan. 3, 2016, when they host Gannon at 3 p.m in a rematch of last year's PSAC semifinals.
