SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Kutztown University women's basketball senior
Natalya Lee (Feasterville, Pa./Rancocas Valley Regional) scored her 1,000th career point on Saturday afternoon in the team's 65-52 setback at Shippensburg University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup at Heiges Field House.
Lee is the 15th player in program history to join the 1,000-point club. She has started in all 94 of her career games and stands at 1,007 points at KU. Lee dropped 12 points on Saturday and is averaging a career-high 14.9 points per game this season.
The Golden Bears (6-4, 4-4 PSAC East) were limited to a season-low 25.7 percent shooting on Saturday. They hung with the Raiders (9-2, 6-2) for three-of-four quarters, but a poor second-quarter display opened Shippensburg's lead to 20 that Kutztown could not overcome.
In the second, 10-minute period, KU shot 4-of-17 from the field and allowed Shippensburg to make 10-of-15 field goals for a 23-11 scoring advantage. KU held a combined -6 scoring advantage in the first, third and fourth quarters.
Jenna Altomare (Pennsylvania Furnace, Pa./State College Area) hoisted a school-record-tying 13 three-point attempts on her way to a team-high 19 points. She made four triples and remains the top three-point shooter in the PSAC. She also grabbed a career-high eight rebounds.
Kelsey Watson (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) led the team with 10 rebounds.
For Shippensburg, Morgan Griffith posted a double-double with 20 points and 15 rebounds. It had more turnovers and made just one three-pointer on the day, but used its strong defensive play to lead it to victory.
Kutztown returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 30 and closes out 2015 with a home game against Holy Family University at Keystone Arena. Tip-off will begin at 3 p.m. following the KU men's game against the University of the Sciences of Philadelphia.
