LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Golden Bears controlled 36:54 time of possession and totaled 500 yards for the second straight week and third time this season in Kutztown University's 34-20 road victory at Lock Haven University's Hubert Jack Stadium on Saturday, keeping its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division title hopes alive.
Kutztown (5-4, 4-2 PSAC East) won its second straight game and has put itself in a viable position to win a share of the regular season division title next weekend. KU is currently tied for third place in the East at 4-2 with Bloomsburg and East Stroudsburg. Shippensburg and West Chester sit atop the East at 5-1.
Looking ahead to next week's matchup against Shippensburg at Andre Reed Stadium, Kutztown can win a share of the East title if:
- KU wins at home vs. Shippensburg, and
- East Stroudsburg wins at West Chester
Kutztown, Shippensburg, Bloomsburg, West Chester and East Stroudsburg would all be 5-2 in the East if that scenario played out. Since all teams went 1-1 in PSAC crossover play, and all teams would have defeated the bottom three seeds in the East, the final tiebreaker for the PSAC Championship game representative would come down to a five-way coin toss.
A 21-0 stretch spanning nearly 15:00 from the third to fourth quarters opened up Kutztown's lead over Lock Haven. KU led 13-6 at halftime, Lock Haven tied the game at 13 with a touchdown on its first drive of the second half, but KU responded with three straight touchdown drives to take control with a 34-13 lead with 6:30 to play.
It is the first time this season KU has scored in all four quarters.
Head coach
Jim Clements moves to 9-0 in his KU career when holding opponents to 24 points or less. Notably, KU has led at halftime in 15 of its last 16 wins, including Saturday.
The Golden Bear defense set the tone from the first drive of the game, forcing a turnover that led to a KU touchdown.
Tyrone Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) got to the Lock Haven quarterback, forced a fumble near midfield, which was recovered by
Zack Delp (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) to put the KU offense in prime position for its first drive.
Chad Barton (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) capped the ensuing 46-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown pass to fellow senior
Anthony Kelly (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area), one of Barton's three touchdowns on the day. Barton, this week's PSAC East Offensive Athlete of the Week, finished with 276 yards on 24-of-32 passing with three scores and no interceptions. He has 53 career touchdown passes and moved into third all-time at KU, passing Kyle Spotts' mark of 51.
The TD reception was Kelly's 19th of his career, moving him into eighth all-time at KU in career touchdown catches.
Kodi Reed (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) caught Barton's next two touchdown passes. Reed, KU's leader in career receiving yards and touchdowns, hauled in career touchdown number 27 and 28 to move into 18th all-time in PSAC history, while extending his consecutive streak of catching a pass to a school-record 42 games, the longest active streak in the PSAC.
Reed finished with seven catches for 64 yards and two scores.
Darrell Scott (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) posted the best performance of his career. A redshirt junior, Scott finished with a career-high 20 carries for 120 yards for a 6.0 average. He took nearly half the carries for the Golden Bears, who finished with 44 attempts for 248 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
Terry Williams (West Orange, N.J./Cosby (Phoenix College)) ran for his ninth and 10th touchdowns of the year, both coming in the second half. It marks a career-high for T. Williams, he is the seventh player to rush for 10 or more touchdowns in a season, and stands in seventh place all-time at KU with 19 career rushing touchdowns in his two seasons at KU.
Redshirt freshman
Craig Reynolds (Willow Grove, Pa./Abington) led the team with seven catches for 80 yards. Junior receiver
Kellen Williams (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) had five catches for 53 yards, moving him into fourth all-time at KU with 2,062 career receiving yards.
Defensively,
Tajier Jefferson (East Orange, N.J./Queen of Peace) and
Kenny Williams (Conshohocken, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh (West Chester)) each tabbed double-digit tackles. Jefferson led the way with 11 from his linebacker position, including a team-high three for-a-loss and a sack.
Kenny Williams (Conshohocken, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh (West Chester)) had 10 as
Darryl Mintz (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) followed with eight.
Delp had two tackles and is 12 shy of 200 in his career.
Lock Haven had poor field position all afternoon, largely due to the performance of KU punter
Andrew Deutsch (Kutztown, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh). Of the four times he was called upon, he averaged 38 yards per punt and placed three-of-four punts inside the 20-yardline.
The Bald Eagles (2-7, 2-4) went to the ground attack for their offensive production. Malyk Harris had 24 carries for 224 yards and a score, including a 75-yard run, for a 9.3 average. Quarterback Caleb Walton threw for 214 yards on 22-for-38 passing and a touchdown. He was sacked twice (Jefferson and
Kurt Kenny (Duncannon, Pa./Susquenita)).
Kickoff against Shippensburg on Saturday, Nov. 7 is set for 1:05 p.m. at Andre Reed Stadium. KU will also be naming its All-Time Team on Nov. 7 at a public ceremony at 10 a.m. at the O'Pake Fieldhouse. The team, as well as all football alumni in attendance, will be invited to take part in a halftime ceremony in celebration of 100 Seasons of KU Football.
