Photo Gallery KUTZTOWN, Pa. – An interception return for a touchdown, a touchdown pass by a wide receiver, and 37 unanswered points highlighted the Kutztown University football team's 51-27 victory over Shippensburg University on Saturday afternoon at Andre Reed Stadium.
The Golden Bears (6-4, 5-2 PSAC East) did everything they had to do on Saturday for a chance to win a second division title in four years. A win over the Red Raiders (7-3, 5-2) secured a second place finish in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division, but KU needed other results around the league to have a shot at the title; results that didn't play out in KU's favor.
Kutztown's second-place finish in the East is its best since winning the title and PSAC Championship in 2011. It exceeded the league's expectations of fifth in this year's preseason poll, as head coach
Jim Clements secured his second winning season in as many years at the helm of the Golden Bears.
Shippensburg entered the day on a five-game winning streak, at the top of the Eastern Division and was playing for a shot at the regular season title and a spot in the PSAC Championship game. Ship has been the thorn in KU's side the last four years, including a heartbreaking KU loss last year, as KU's last win in the series came in 2010. Saturday marked the most points KU ever scored against Shippensburg in the previous 67 meetings.
The game was tied at 14-14 early in the second quarter. Both teams looked sharp offensively, but it was KU's 37-point scoring streak, spanning from the middle of the second quarter to the fourth quarter, that made the difference.
Kutztown scored by way of three rushing touchdowns, three passing touchdowns, a field goal and an interception for a touchdown.
Anthony Kelly (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) caught two touchdown passes, with his second of the day giving Kutztown all the momentum. Leading 24-14 midway through the third quarter, KU ran a toss play to wide receiver
Kellen Williams (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg), who fired the ball deep downfield to a wide open Kelly for the 58-yard touchdown.
It was Williams' first career TD pass, and Kutztown's first TD pass by a wide receiver since
Zach Snyder, doubling as a holder on field goals, threw one on a fake field goal attempt on Sept. 17, 2011 at home against Lock Haven.
Following the unorthodox TD pass, KU silenced Shippensburg's next drive with its fourth of six straight scores on a 31-yard interception return by
Tyler Pratt (Northumberland, Pa./Shikellamy). It was KU's first pick-six in four years (John Kreuer in 2011).
Kutztown posted 477 yards of total offense, is averaging 481.6 per game this season, and is right on pace to break the school-record of 481.1 from 2012.
Offensively, senior receiver
Kodi Reed (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) led the way with nine catches for 176 yards and a score. It marked career-highs for catches and yards for KU's all-time leaders in career receiving yards and touchdowns. He caught a pass for a school-record 43rd straight game (all 43 career games for Reed), moved into 24th in PSAC history with 2,777 career receiving yards and 15th with his 29th career touchdown catch. With one game left in his collegiate career, Reed needs nine catches next week to tie Kutztown's career receptions record, the final career receiving record Reed doesn't own.
Notably, Reed and Williams became the first Golden Bear duo in school history last week to both have 2,000 or more yards while playing on the same team. Reed has a career-high 915 yards this season, 85 shy of being the second player in KU history to top the 1,000-mark in a season. Reed's 10 TD catches this season are a career-high and are tied for fourth-most in a single-season in KU history.
Kelly's 112 yards and two scores marked season-highs for the senior. He moved into 15th in KU history with 92 career catches, eight shy of the century mark, 15th with 1,309 career receiving yards, and tied Williams for fourth all-time with his 21st career touchdown catch.
On the ground,
Darrell Scott (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) thrived in short-yardage situations, running for a pair of two-yard scores. It marked the 10th and 11th of his career, moving into a tie for 15th all-time in KU history for rushing touchdowns.
Terry Williams (West Orange, N.J./Cosby (Phoenix College)) ran for his 20th career touchdown, moving him into sole possession of seventh all-time at KU. It also marked his 11th of the season, fifth-most in KU single-season history.
Kicker
Alec Rosenfeld (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) attempted his first field goal in nearly a month and converted it from 28 yards. It was his third of the season and 15th of his young career after kicking 12 last year, moving him into fifth-most all-time in career field goals.
Defensively, junior captain
Zack Delp (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) led the way with 10 tackles, 2.5 for-a-loss and 1.5 sacks. It moved him up to 198 career tackles, two shy of being the 21st player in school history to be part of the 200-tackle club.
Kurt Kenny (Duncannon, Pa./Susquenita) has played outstanding this year. He stepped up with nine tackles and a forced fumble on Saturday, all part of a career-high 65-tackle season for the redshirt junior.
Tyrone Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) hounded the Shippensburg quarterback for two sacks.
Kenny Williams (Conshohocken, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh (West Chester)) and
Ronny Tomasetti (Dickson City, Pa./Mid-Valley) each had pass breakups.
The Golden Bears wrap up their 2015 season in hunt for a potential seven-win campaign in next week's season-finale at home vs. Clarion University (7-3). Kickoff at Andre Reed Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 14 is set for 1:05 p.m.
