INDIANA, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's soccer team defeated Indiana University of Pennsylvania 2-1 on Friday afternoon at South Campus Field.
Kutztown (4-3-1, 4-3 PSAC) got the scoring started early on a goal by sophomore
Brooke May (East Berlin, Pa./Dover Area) at the 7:50 mark in the first half. It was May's second career goal and was assisted by senior
Diana Malanga (Lavallette, N.J./St. Rose) off a corner for KU.
The assist for Malanga was the 10th of her career, which ties her for ninth place all-time in career assists at KU with former Golden Bear Chelsea Bressler.
Indiana (Pa.) (5-4-1, 4-3-1 PSAC) answered right back with a goal by Lexie Palluconi, her seventh of the season, on an assist from Erica Boyle.
The Golden Bears regained the lead at the 57:03 in the second half on a goal by
Sam Busillo (Lincoln University, Pa./Avon Grove), which was launched from 30 yards out and found the back of the net due to a misplay by the goalkeeper. It was Busillo's second goal of the year and proved to be the difference in the game.
Sophomore
Deanna Messner (Willow Grove, Pa./Archbishop Wood) started in goal for Kutztown, recording four saves in the first half before handing over the cage to freshman
Imani Taylor (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) for the second half. Taylor played well, recording three saves and not allowing a goal.
Kutztown was outshot by IUP 9-8, but had four corners compared to three for the Crimson Hawks. KU goalies totaled seven saves and IUP had one.
The Golden Bears return to the field tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 3 at 3 p.m. to face California (Pa.) at the Phillipsburg Soccer Complex.
