Football Falls on the Road at West Chester

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Kutztown University football team battled with West Chester University on Saturday for first place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division, but the Golden Bears dropped a 44-14 decision on the road at West Chester's John A. Farrell Stadium.

West Chester (4-2, 3-0 PSAC East) controlled the line of scrimmage and took advantage of mistakes by the Golden Bears (3-3, 2-1) to build its lead. West Chester totaled 589 yards and ran nearly twice as many plays as Kutztown (80-47).

Kutztown put up 280 yards of offense, 173 through the air and 107 on the ground, and scored all of its points in the second half. Trailing 34-0, Kodi Reed (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) hauled in a six-yard touchdown pass midway through the third quarter. It marked his school-record 26th career touchdown catch, tied for 27th in PSAC history.

Reed also added onto his school receiving yards record. He finished the day with three catches for 53 yards to improve to 2,418 career yards, 37th in PSAC history. He moved into second in KU history in career receptions with 168, 32 shy of the KU record. Saturday marked the 39th consecutive game Reed has hauled in a catch (all 39 games of his career), the longest active streak in the PSAC and second-longest in school history.

Kellen Williams (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) led the team Saturday with five catches for 66 yards, moving him up to ninth in school history with 1,765 career receiving yards.

The Golden Bears blocked a punt for the second straight game. Ryan Hubley (Oxford, Pa./Oxford Area) blocked a punt early in the fourth quarter, and Tyler Pratt (Northumberland, Pa./Shikellamy) picked it up and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown.

The scoring drought snapped a stretch of seven straight games that KU scored 30 or more points. It was also West Chester's fourth straight win over Kutztown.

Zack Delp (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) and Kenny Williams (Conshohocken, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh (West Chester)) were the main stoppers of the West Chester attack on defense. Delp notched his fourth double-digit tackle game of the year, the eighth of his career, with a team-high 11 tackles and a sack. Kenny Williams (Conshohocken, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh (West Chester)) had 10 tackles, nine solo, and a sack from his safety position.

West Chester quarterback Pat Moriarty completed 30-of-40 passes for 437 yards and five touchdowns. He was sacked four times but did not turn the ball over. His top target was tight end Tim Brown, who had eight catches for 99 yards. Tyler Karpinski caught touchdowns on two of his four receptions.

On the ground, Terry Williams (West Orange, N.J./Cosby (Phoenix College)) led the KU position group with seven carries for 51 yards, a 7.3 average. West Chester's Brandon Monk had 13 carries for 70 yards, a 5.2 average, with a touchdown.

Kutztown remains on the road with another tough test next week. It travels north to Bloomsburg University on Saturday, Oct. 17 for a PSAC East matchup. Kickoff from Danny Hale Field at Redman Stadium is set for 2 p.m.
