HTML Box Score ERIE, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team led by one with under five minutes to play against Gannon University on Wednesday night. Unfortunately for the Golden Bears, the Golden Knights ended the game on a nine-point run to earn a 66-58 victory at the Hammermill Center.
Kutztown (5-8, 4-6 PSAC) hung with the reigning Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) runner-up in Gannon (9-4, 8-2) leading up to the final four minutes. It led 50-49 off a jumper by
Alyssa Bonenberger (Walnutport, Pa./Northampton Area) with 4:42 to play, but the Golden Knights were poised to make a late run on their home floor.
Gannon answered with a three-pointer by McKenna Shives to take the a two-point lead, which kick-started Gannon to scoring on its next five possessions to hold a seven-point, 61-54 lead with 1:39 to play. Kutztown gave itself opportunities with three offensive rebounds over the next two minutes, but could not cash in timely field goals to answer Gannon's late run.
Since KU took its final lead of the game with 4:42 to play, it shot 2-of-11 from the field, including a draught of 4:26 until 16 seconds remained in the game, while Gannon ended the final 4:29 shooting 4-of-5 from the field and 8-of-9 from the free throw line.
Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) led KU with 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting with a team-high nine rebounds. Foul trouble limited her to 19 minutes and she also tallied three steals.
Bonenberger scored 12 points and finished with eight rebounds and a 4-for-4 performance at the free throw line.
Brianna Morales (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic (Northampton County Community College)) posted her second straight double-digit scoring night with 10 points in 36 minutes with four rebounds and two assists.
Kelsey Watson (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) was third on the team with seven rebounds.
Natalya Lee (Feasterville, Pa./Rancocas Valley Regional) scored eight points and went over 700 in her career in the setback (704).
Kutztown was coming off its best three-point shooting game of the season on Sunday against Mercyhurst, but struggled on Wednesday with a 3-for-20 night from beyond the arc. It shot 33.8 percent from the field while making 11-of-13 free throws.
Notably, KU committed a season-low 10 turnovers.
Gannon responded with a 41.7 shooting percentage and just nine turnovers. Nettie Blake, Candice Hendricks and Jennie Thies all scored 10 points for the Golden Knights. Blake grabbed a team-high nine rebounds with two blocks, as Thies had eight rebounds.
Wednesday marked the final PSAC crossover game of the season. The Golden Bears return home for Eastern Division play on Saturday, Jan. 10 to take on Lock Haven University at Keystone Arena at 1 p.m. KU dropped both matchups to the Bald Eagles last season.
