Alyssa Bonenberger (Walnutport, Pa./Northampton Area) and
Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) each hit the floor for their 100th career games wearing the Maroon and Gold on Saturday afternoon, but the Kutztown University women's basketball team couldn't overcome 21st-ranked Bloomsburg University. The Huskies won the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup, 70-57, from Bloomsburg's Nelson Field House.
With the victory, Bloomsburg remains on top of the PSAC East standings with an 11-1 conference record (13-2 overall). Kutztown stands at the top of a three-way tie for fifth place with a 5-7 PSAC record (6-9 overall).
The Huskies claimed a double-digit lead in the final minutes of the first half, but the Golden Bears chipped away at the onset of the second frame. After three minutes of play in the second half, KU's
Kelsey Watson (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) scored the Golden Bears' next eight points to bring the game to a 35-35 tie.
Jenna Altomare (Pennsylvania Furnace, Pa./State College Area) scored all eight of her points in the game over the next 8:10, helping the Golden Bears push to five-point lead (53-48) with 5:50 remaining in the game. The Huskies responded with a 10-0 run and a 12-0 run to deflate KU and put the game out of reach for Kutztown.
Watson struggled from the field in the first half, but improved in the second and used a 7-for-8 performance from the free-throw line to record a team-high 17 points. She also led the team with eight rebounds.
Bonenberger (8) and Campbell (7) combined for 15 of KU's points and they each brought down six boards. Bonenberger recorded three assists and two steals, while Campbell swatted away a game-high three blocks.
Natalya Lee (Feasterville, Pa./Rancocas Valley Regional) had a well-rounded game with six points, five rebounds and three assists in 39 minutes of play. She sunk all four of her free-throw attempts. Altomare knocked down two of the team's three three-pointers, with
Kalee Fuegel (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) tallying the other.
Bloomsburg had three players score in double figures, including a game-high 19 points from Camden Boehner coming off the bench. Taylor Maldonado notched 14 points and seven boards, and Marla Simmons recorded 12 points and a game-high six helpers.
The Golden Bears will have a quick turnaround before heading to Philadelphia to play the University of the Sciences on Monday, Jan. 19 at 6 p.m. in nonconference action.
