KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Saturday night was a historic one for the Kutztown University football team as it set school-records for points scored and margin of victory in a 74-0 win over Cheyney University in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division opener at University Field.
Â
The Golden Bears (2-2, 2-1 PSAC East) set the record for points scored in a game early in the fourth quarter, breaking the previous record of 67 from 1991 against Bloomsburg that stood for 23 years. The 74-point victory broke a 65-year school-record of 58 from a 58-0 victory over Trenton State in 1949.
Â
Kutztown dominated the stat sheet with advantages in first downs (32-3), total yards (572-47) and yards-per-play (6.7-1.0). Kutztown scored nine touchdowns, kicked three field goals, and scored a safety on the night. Defensively, Cheyney's 47 total yards marked the lowest for the Kutztown defense since 1998, when it allowed 93 to East Stroudsburg.
Â
Offensively, running back
Terry Williams (West Orange, N.J./Cosby (Phoenix College)) ran for four touchdowns and 180 yards, 166 in the second half. His four touchdowns were the most by a KU back since Stephen Gammage ran for a school-record five touchdowns in 2002 against Cheyney. Williams' 180 yards came on 25 carries and were the most yards for a KU back since
Curtis Wortham (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) ran for 186 against Millersville in 2012.
Â
As a team, Kutztown ran for a season-high 272 yards. Starter
James Wah Jr. (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) ran for 38 yards on nine carries, and
Eryk Cerankowski (Leesport, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) stepped in in the second half and churned out 33 hard-earned yards and scored his first career touchdown.
Â
Quarterback
Chad Barton (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) put together another stellar performance with sensational numbers spanning just the first half. He completed 20-of-25 passes for 279 yards and four touchdowns in the first half of Saturday night's game. He did not throw an interception to improve his season's touchdown/interception ratio to 15/1.
Â
Notably, the Kutztown offensive line did not allow a sack for the first time since 2012 against Cheyney.
Â
Four Golden Bears caught touchdown passes, including
Anthony Kelly (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area), who hauled in his eighth score of the season and entered the day leading Division II in touchdown catches. It was his 14th career touchdown catch, tying him for 12th in school history with KU and Pro Football Hall of Famer Andre Reed.
Â
Kellen Williams (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) led the way with seven catches for 89 yards and a touchdown, his third of the season.
Nathan Hollander (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) had a career-high 91 yards on five catches and a touchdown, as
Brett Fox (Laureldale, Pa./Muhlenburg) also caught a 38-yard touchdown pass on his only catch of the night. It was his 12th career touchdown to tie him for 14th in program history.
Â
Freshman kicker
Alec Rosenfeld (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) shined when called upon. Not only did not make all nine of his extra-point attempts, he made all three of his field goal attempts, including a career-best 44-yarder. It was the first three field goal game for a Golden Bear since Matt Dineen kicked three against C.W. Post in 2010.
Â
Defensively, Kutztown allowed five total second-half yards and did not allow a first down in the second half. It forced five turnovers in the game with three fumble recoveries, a failed fourth-down conversion, and a diving interception by
Drake Brumfield (Marietta, Pa./Donegal). It marked KU's first shutout since a 24-0 win over West Chester in the snow in 2011.
Â
Tackles were spread throughout the Golden Bear roster, including a team-high seven by
Sam Dougan (Secane, Pa./Ridley).
Kurt Kenny (Duncannon, Pa./Susquenita) and
Steve Plousis (Philadelphia, Pa./Ridley) each had five, as Zachary Delp and
Tyrone Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) each had a sack.
Â
Kutztown looks ahead to Millersville University next weekend. It takes on the Marauders on Saturday, Oct. 4 on the road beginning at 4 p.m. The game can be listened to live on the official voice of Kutztown University, KUR at
