MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Three Kutztown University running backs rushed for more than 100 yards for the first time in school history on Saturday as Kutztown rushed for 383 yards and five touchdowns in a 54-7 win over Millersville University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division game from Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.
Â
Terry Williams (West Orange, N.J./Cosby (Phoenix College)),
James Wah Jr. (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) and
Darrell Scott (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) all eclipsed the 100-yard mark and combined for 332 of Kutztown's 383 rushing yards and all five of its rushing touchdowns. It is the most rushing yards as a team for Kutztown since it ran for 384 at Saint Anselm in 2011.
Â
Williams led the way with 126 yards on 12 carries. He scored two touchdowns, one week after scoring four against Cheyney last week. He gave Kutztown a 20-0 lead early in the second quarter with a two-yard TD run, and capped Saturday's scoring with a 65-yard dash midway through the fourth quarter. It is the longest rush by a Golden Bear this season. Williams ran for a career-high 180 yards last week, marking the first KU back to run for 100 yards in consecutive games since Robbie Frey in 2011.
Â
Wah Jr. notched his first career 100-yard game with a career-high 104-yard performance and a touchdown. He and Scott each carried the ball a team-high 17 times, as Scott finished with 102 yards a three total touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving).
Â
Kutztown built its lead up to 47-0 late in the third quarter to extend its consecutive points streak to 121 after a 74-0 win over Cheyney last week. It also held its opponents scoreless for seven straight quarters before Millersville snapped the streak with a touchdown run five minutes into the fourth quarter.
Â
The offense was committed to the run throughout Saturday's divisional tilt, accounting for 383 of the team's 479 total yards. KU held advantages in first downs (23-7) and limited Millersville 140 total yards, 98 of which came on the ground.
Â
Quarterback
Chad Barton (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) tossed two touchdown passes to improve his season touchdown/interception ratio to a PSAC-leading 17-1. He completed 11-of-19 passes for 96 yards and was not sacked for the second consecutive game. It is the first time the KU offensive line did not allow a sack in consecutive games since 2010.
Â
Nathan Hollander (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) and
Kellen Williams (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) combined for eight of the team's 11 catches. Hollander led the way with five catches and Williams hauled in Barton's other TD pass.
Â
Freshman kicker
Alec Rosenfeld (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) drilled both of his field goal attempts, 28 and 35 yards, and remains perfect on the year at 6-for-6.
Â
Defensively, Zachary Delp led the way individually with eight tackles from his linebacker position.
Jalen Nieves (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) returned from injury and hauled in an interception.
Drake Brumfield (Marietta, Pa./Donegal) also had an interception, his team-leading third of the year.
Sam Dougan (Secane, Pa./Ridley) notched seven tackles and
Adam Goeringer (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) finished with six.
Â
Kutztown returns home for its next two games, both of which are expected to be against nationally-ranked opponents. It takes on undefeated and currently ninth-ranked West Chester University for a Thursday night game on Oct. 9 beginning at 7:05 p.m. at University Field. The Golden Rams earned a narrow 22-21 victory last year on their home turf.
