Box Score 2 CHEYNEY, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's volleyball team was held scoreless Saturday afternoon in two Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover matchups from Cope Hall on the campus of Cheyney University. KU suffered 3-0 setbacks to Slippery Rock University and Edinboro University.
Slippery Rock (9-2, 3-0 PSAC) won by scores of 25-20, 27-25, and 25-22, while Edinboro (11-2, 4-0 PSAC) was victorious by scores of 25-12, 25-18, and 25-15.
Kutztown evens out to a 5-5 overall record, while still looking for its first victory in conference play (0-4).
The defensive line was active in the opening match, recording a total of 76 digs. Sophomore
Kim Groff (Audubon, Pa./Methacton (Moravian)) shaped an impressive performance of 28 digs, the most in a three-set match by a Golden Bear since Nicole Biuso recorded 30 in 2007. Groff's 10 digs against EU also led the squad and her two service aces between both games was the best on KU.
Emily Kopinski (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) finished with 21 digs on the day, while setter
Anna Conti (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City) totaled 16 digs. Conti produced 25 assists in the first match, but was held to 10 in the second.
Senior
Danielle Van Buren (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley) controlled the attack again on Saturday and led the team in kills in all four matches this weekend. The right-side hitter tallied 12 kills against Slippery Rock and seven against Edinboro.
Chelsea Braga (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach (Fairleigh Dickinson)) ranked second on the team in the opening match with eight kills, but was held scoreless against the Fighting Scots.
Audrey Stringer (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury),
Aly York (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone), and
Zandria Zielinski (York, Pa./York Catholic) each tallied six kills against Slippery Rock, while Stringer and
Cara Reilly (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) recorded four kills each against Edinboro.
Stringer remains a force on the line defensively, leading the way with 10 blocks on Saturday, three of which were solo blocks. Conti finished with five block assists, including three against EU that ties her career high in a match. Van Buren helped with three and Zielinski recorded two.
After a long weekend, the Maroon and Gold have the week off until another trip out west is in store. KU will face Pitt-Johnstown University on Friday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m., followed by Lock Haven University the next day.
