KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University softball team nearly put together two shutout victories on Wednesday afternoon as it outscored Goldey-Beacom College 14-2 in two non-conference games at North Campus Field. KU won game one 6-2, and walked-off in game two with a 8-0 victory.

If it had not been for one pitch, the Golden Bears (13-16) would have picked up two shutouts, as Goldey-Beacom only scored off a two-run home run in the first inning of game one. KU responded by not allowing a hit for the rest of the game in a 6-2 win.

Dominique Ficara (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional (Hofstra)) picked up the complete win in game one, and Savannah Nierintz (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby) won the nightcap in the circle. They combined for nine strikeouts and no walks, led by Ficara's seven strikeouts in the opener. She threw 82 pitches as her only hits allowed were in the first inning. Nierintz needed just 67 pitches in six innings to earn the win. She had two strikeouts and allowed seven hits.

Senior Colleen Smith (Islip Terrace, NY/East Islip (Hofstra)) drove in RBI in the first and third innings of game one, including her team-leading fifth home run in the third to tie the game at 2-2. In the doubleheader, she went 3-for-4 with four walks and four RBI.

Tied at 2-2 in the fourth inning with two outs, Rachel Lawes (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) and Jackie Hetzler (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) hit back-to-back RBI knocks to give KU a 4-2 lead through four. Marissa Linquist (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) capped the game one scoring with a two-run double in the fifth to give KU the 6-2 win.

Hetzler led the Golden Bears with a 3-for-4 performance atop the lineup in the nightcap. With her four hits on the day, she now ranks in the top 10 in school history in at-bats (628), triples (nine), hit-by-pitch (30) and stolen bases (51).

Danielle Sienko (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter) drove in the first and final runs of the game for KU. She opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the third. KU scored four in the fifth inning off a wild pitch, a two-run triple by Smith (her first of the season), and a RBI single from Marka Ballard (Redwood City, CA/Mercy Burlingame) as KU led 5-0 through five.

Hetzler drove in a run with a single in the sixth, KU scored its seventh run off a fielding error on the Goldey-Beacom catcher, and a fielding error on the third baseman scored Hetzler from third to end the game in six innings.

Kutztown returns to action tomorrow, Thursday, April 10 to take on PSAC East opponent Shippensburg University at North Campus Field at 2:30 p.m.
