Box Score 2 Game 1: Kutztown 6, East Stroudsburg 1 (HTML Box Score) Game 2: Kutztown 6, East Stroudsburg 1 (HTML Box Score) EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Kutztown University softball team finished up its 2014 season with two home runs and a pair of 6-1 victories against East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East action from Zimbar Field on Saturday afternoon.
Unfortunately, the wins came a little too late for Kutztown (20-29, 11-17 PSAC E), who have been eliminated from postseason contention. The same goes for East Stroudsburg (14-27, 9-17 PSAC E), who will finish up its season tomorrow at Shippensburg.
A big four-run first inning got things going for the Golden Bears in the opener, highlighted by a three-run home run by
Mary Kociencki (Columbia, N.J./Sparta ). KU kept it rolling in the second, when
Danielle Sienko (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter) struck an RBI single with the bases loaded to plate
Stephanie Curry (Winchester, VA/Millbrook) and go up 5-0.
ESU tallied its only run in the bottom of the third off an RBI single by Rebecca Smith. Neither squad had much else doing, until KU capped it off in the seventh with
Morgan Booth (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) scoring the final run of off Sienko's third RBI single of the game.
Sienko batted an impressive 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Kociencki tallied the other three RBI. Curry and
Rachel Lawes (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) secured KU's other two hits.
Dominique Ficara (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional (Hofstra)) turned in a six-hit, four-strikeout, complete game in the circle to earn the Golden Bears the victory. Allison Mende gave up five runs in the start for ESU, with Laura Suits striking out two in the final six innings.
Colleen Smith (Islip Terrace, NY/East Islip (Hofstra)) had a huge game in the nightcap, batting 4-for-4, with five RBI and a home run. KU initiated the scoring yet again in the first, when Smith singled to left field to plate
Jackie Hetzler (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township). Smith followed up with a two-RBI single in the top of the third, scoring Booth and
Ashley Lechner (Willow Street, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg) to go up 3-0.
The Golden Bears capped of their season with a high-powered final inning. Booth got things started with a lead-off triple, allowing Sienko to bring her home with an RBI single. With the next at-bat, Smith blasted a two-run home run to clear the bases and secure the doubleheader sweep.
Kociencki pitched the complete game this time, allowing seven hits and earning one strikeout. Rachael Liguori pitched the first six innings for ESU with an impressive eight strikeouts.
Smith, Booth, Sienko and
Marka Ballard (Redwood City, CA/Mercy Burlingame) all finished with a multi-hit game, while Lechner and Hetzler tallied one a piece.
Smith finishes up the season as KU's leading batter, averaging .365 with 14 doubles, six home runs, and 36 RBI. Sienko shared the lead with 36 RBI, batting .322 with a team-high 49 hits. Ballard, a freshman, ranked third with a .314 average. Hetlzer led the team with eight stolen bases and Booth secured a team-and-conference-high five triples.
The Golden Bears only featured three pitchers in the circle this season. Ficara led with a 2.39 ERA, bringing in 14 wins with 21 complete games and 102 strikeouts. Kociencki and
Savannah Nierintz (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby) combined for six wins this season.
