KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University softball senior class celebrated their successful record-breaking careers on Wednesday afternoon as the team held its annual Senior Day at North Campus Field. Members of the class had some shining moments in a 3-2 setback and a 1-0 win against Georgian Court University.

Kutztown's four seniors were Stephanie Curry (Winchester, VA/Millbrook), Jackie Hetzler (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township), Colleen Smith (Islip Terrace, NY/East Islip (Hofstra)) and Morgan Booth (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg), three of which are four-year members of the Golden Bears.

In the opener, the teams battled through a pitching duel for the first five innings. Georgian Court broke the scoreless tie with a pair of runs in the sixth inning. With a runner on first and second base, a fly out moved the runner to third. The throw was not in time, but the following throw from third base to second was wide in an attempt to throw out the second runner, plating the runner from third for a 1-0 lead. A single in the next at-bat gave the Lions a 2-0 lead.

The Golden Bears were down to their final strike and had runners on first and second base in the seventh inning. With two outs and two strikes against her, Curry drove in a line drive that curled into the left-center field gap to score both runners on her stand-up double and tie the game at 2-2.

With the international tiebreaker rule in effect that placed a runner on second base to start the inning, the Lions drove in the run with a game-winning double. Kutztown had a foul-out, batters interference call against it when the ball hit the KU batter outside of the batter's box, and a fly-out to center field to end the game.

Dominique Ficara (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional (Hofstra)) pitched a complete game for Kutztown. She allowed seven hits and three runs – one earned – and tallied five strikeouts. Georgian Court's Tina Morgan had a no-hitter in tact through the first 5.2 innings and picked up her sixth win of the season with eight strikeouts. Kutztown finished with three hits.

Mary Kociencki (Columbia, N.J./Sparta ) pitched her first shutout of the season and 12th of her career in the nightcap. She allowed six hits with three strikeouts on 87 pitches. She also had a season-high five fielding assists with no errors.

Pitchers dominated in the finale as well, as the only run was scored in the sixth inning. Danielle Sienko (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter) led off the inning with a single, as a walk by Smith and a single by Savannah Nierintz (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby) loaded the bases with one out. Freshman Marka Ballard (Redwood City, CA/Mercy Burlingame) drove in the game-winning run on the first pitch with a single up the middle to give Kutztown the 1-0 lead.

Hetlzer went 1-for-1 at the top of the lineup with two walks and a stand-up triple in the nightcap. Nierintz notched a game-high three hits and had three fielding assists in the victory.

Kutztown returns to conference play over the next three days, beginning at Bloomsburg University on Thursday, April 24 beginning at 2:30 p.m.
