MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Primarily used as a pitcher in the early portion of the season, junior
Mary Kociencki (Columbia, N.J./Sparta ) made her mark as a hitter on Monday with a home run and five RBI in the second game of a doubleheader against Millersville University. The surge lifted KU to a 7-2 game two victory after dropping the first game, 3-0.
Millersville pitcher Brianna Andraos owned game one with a three-hit shutout in her eighth win of the season. KU notched just one extra-base hit in the opener, a double by
Danielle Sienko (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter) in the top of the seventh inning. She notched seven strikeouts.
Game two went much differently for the Golden Bears (8-13, 2-2 PSAC East). Not only did their offense come alive, but starting pitcher
Dominique Ficara (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional (Hofstra)) kept the Marauders (13-9, 3-1) off the board for the first five innings to help hand MU its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division loss in its first four games of the season.
Kociencki led off the second inning with a home run to straightaway center field to give KU the early lead. Senior
Morgan Booth (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) led off the following inning with a triple, and scored on a RBI double from Sienko. A pair of walks loaded the bases with no outs and brought game one starter, Andraos, back in the circle to try and limit the damage.
An illegal pitch scored
Lisa Lawson (Morgantown, Pa./Twin Valley) from third, and a two-run single down the left field line by Kociencki gave KU a 5-0 lead. Kociencki drove in her fourth and fifth runs of the game in the fourth inning with a two-out single to center field to score
Colleen Smith (Islip Terrace, NY/East Islip (Hofstra)) and Sienko, who reached base via her third double of the doubleheader.
Kociencki was 3-for-3 in game two. Leadoff hitter
Jackie Hetzler (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) and Sienko also had multi-hit games for the Golden Bears with two hits apiece.
Both of Millersville's runs came in the bottom of the sixth inning and were unearned for Ficara. With two runners on, an error on the KU shortstop plated the first run from second base. A fielder's choice, which would have ended the inning if it had not been for the error, resulted in the runner scoring from third base to close the scoring at 7-2.
Ficara threw a complete game while allowing the two unearned runs. She struck out four batters and did not allow any walks to even her season record at 6-6.
Kutztown returns home for a pair of doubleheaders over the next two days. KU hosts Lock Haven University on Tuesday, April 1 at North Campus Field for a pair of games slated to begin at 2:30 p.m.
