KUTZTOWN, Pa. – After a few weather postponements, the Kutztown University women's lacrosse team finally kicked off its 2014 season on Friday at University Field, but were defeated 15-3 by a tough Philadelphia University squad.
Kutztown (0-1) featured plenty of new faces in its opening contest and will probably need a few games to adjust with a rookie-filled roster. The Maroon and Gold was also without senior captain
Krystine Beodeker (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley) for Friday's setback.
Philadelphia (2-1) opened the game with a 9-0 scoring run, powered by the one-two punch of Allison Brian and Liz Mower to head into halftime.
Freshman
Sarah Holmes (Stevensville, MD/Kent Island) got things going for the Golden Bears in the second half, scoring her first collegiate goal off a free-position attempt.
Sophomore
Taylor Sandin (Freehold, NJ/Colts Neck) was next to find the back of the net, and then set up junior
Taylor Stone (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) for KU's final goal.
Senior keeper
JoAnn McLaughlin (Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape) recorded 13 saves and three groundballs and freshman backup
Abby Cox (York, PA/West York) snagged two saves in the final 15 minutes.
Brian and Mower led the Rams with a combined seven goals and five assists. Elizabeth Marroasu added three goals and Emily Ray knocked in two.
KU will get right back at it tomorrow, March 15, heading to New Jersey for a 12 p.m. matchup with Georgian Court University.
