KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team travels to face Bloomsburg University on Feb. 26 for the regular season finale Wednesday night at Nelson Field House. Tipoff for Wednesday's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division finale is set for 5:30 p.m.
While the Golden Bears (9-16, 6-9 PSAC East) are locked in with the sixth seed in the PSAC Championship Tournament, which begins Saturday, they can earn head coach
Janet Malouf the 300th win of her career. Kutztown may need to prepare for a playoff match-up against Shippensburg, a team that defeated KU 81-52 on Saturday at Keystone Arena. This game could provide a strong litmus test, as the Huskies (22-3, 13-2) won the first meeting in Kutztown, 74-56.
LAST TIME OUT: The Golden Bears were swept by Shippensburg after losing 81-52 to the Red Raiders on Saturday at Keystone Arena. Kutztown set a team school record in the victory with 14 blocks, but that was overshadowed by a 48-16 run from Ship that came very late in the first half and through three quarters of the second half. KU shot only 8-of-29 (27.6 percent) from the field in the second stanza. The Maroon and Gold did received strong play from their starters in the frontcourt, as
Nicole Donahue (Wall, N.J./St. Rose) scored 14 points and
Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) added 11.
STATISTICAL ADVIA-TION: Along with the 11 points, junior forward
Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) grabbed nine rebounds and blocked eight shots. The block total gives her 69 for the season, which set a new school record for a single season, surpassing Becky Savage's 68 in the 2002-03 season. Of note earlier this year, she earned the program's first ever triple-double on Dec. 7, including a single-game school record with 10 blocks. Campbell blocked 119 shots for her career, which ranks fifth in KU history. The junior ranks second in the PSAC with 2.8 blocks and 2.8 steals per game. Campbell also averages 10.8 points and 7.6 rebounds per game.
APPROACHING 300: With the Feb. 15 win against Millersville, head coach
Janet Malouf earned her 299th win at Kutztown. In her 20th season, she stands one win away from a career milestone that 39 active Division II head coaches reached in women's basketball. Furthermore, only four coaches in PSAC history earned 300 wins while coaching at an institution in the conference. A three-time PSAC East Coach of the Year, Malouf coached KU to three 20-plus win seasons.
MRS. RELIABLE: Through her three years at KU, junior guard/forward
Alyssa Bonenberger (Walnutport, PA/Northampton Area) started 77 consecutive games and counting. With that, she's become one of the main focal points on offense. Her 10.0 points and 7.4 rebounds per game both ranks second on the team, behind
Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape). Her five double-doubles co-leads the team with Campbell. Bonenberger shoots 39.0 percent from the field this season.
BOARDED UP: The Golden Bears briefly began the year with rebounding success, but have since then struggled. Kutztown began the season with 144 rebounds in its first three games, earning a positive rebound margin in each game. In the 22 games since then, the Golden Bears won only three more rebounding battles and tieing two others. The team's average -4.5 rebounding margin ranks 16th in the PSAC, ahead of only Clarion (-4.6) and Cheyney (-5.9).
OTHER RANKS: Heading into the final regular season game, the Golden Bears rank second in blocks per game (4.72), fourth in steals per game (10.32) and ninth in assists per game (13.88). What holds back KU are the rebounding margin and the shooting margin (-1.8 percent).
Looking in the Other Corner: the Bloomsburg Huskies
LEADER OF THE PACK: With a 15-game winning streak that includes 11 in the PSAC East, the Huskies moved into first place and clinched their fourth consecutive outright title in the division. The streak includes 12 games allowing 65 points or fewer, eight games shooting 45 percent or better from the field and 10 games with 15 free throws made or more.
INSIDE EFFICIENCY: After seeing sparing time as a redshirt freshman last year, forward Adreana Sadowski took to the task of becoming a starter with flying colors. Sadowski shoots a blazing 58.4 percent from the floor en route to a 13.8 points per game average. The Fleetwood native has shot worse than 40 percent in only one game this season (3-of-8 against ESU).
HEY THERE, COACH: Huskies head coach Bill Cleary is in his sixth season as head coach at the university. Cleary is making his mark in the program, sending the Huskies to the NCAA Tournament in two of the last three seasons. Cleary previous spent time as a head coach at Wilmington University, where he won the ECAC Championship in 2008.
