KUTZTOWN, Pa. –
Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) flirted with a triple-double as the Kutztown University women's basketball team suffered a convincing 81-52 loss in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup against rival Shippensburg University at Keystone Arena Saturday afternoon.
Despite the loss, Kutztown's record (9-16, 6-9 PSAC E) is still good enough to secure the final spot in the PSAC playoffs, thanks to a little help from Lock Haven's loss at the hands of Millersville earlier today. The final score of that game was 75-62.
Campbell had 11 points and nine rebounds, along with an impressive eight blocks. Her eight blocks gave her the Kutztown University single-season record for blocks, with a total of 69 blocks this season and counting. Campbell was two shy of the school's single-game block record of 10, which she set against West Chester earlier this season (12/7), which is also the same game she recorded the first ever triple-double in Kutztown women's basketball history.
For much of the first half, Shippensburg (17-8, 11-4 PSAC E) and Kutztown were going through a typical back-and-forth affair. It was beginning to pan out to be a well fought battle, but an impressive 8-0 run in the remaining 1:18 of the half gave Ship an immense amount of momentum, and they never looked back.
Shippensburg began with a 13-6 run in the beginning five minutes of the second half, and Kutztown never truly got any type of offense rhythm. That would prove to be costly as Ship shot a solid 42.9 percent from the field, as opposed to Kutztown's 35 percent. Shippensburg also shot efficiently from the free-throw line with a 78 percent performance.
Aside from the shooting, Kutztown was also out rebounded by 22 boards (50-28). Shippensburg capitalized on the advantage by getting 21 second chance points, as opposed to Kutztown's four.
Toward the end of the game, the Raiders took away any thought of a comeback for the Golden Bears by scoring 12 points in two minutes. The impressive offense attack was led by sophomore Stephanie Knauer, senior Sarah Strybuc, and freshman Morgan Griffith, as the three-headed monster combined for a total of 50 points and 24 rebounds on the game.
Kutztown received offensive help from junior
Nicole Donahue (Wall, N.J./St. Rose), as she poured in 14 points on 58.3 percent shooting, and added three steals on defense. Junior
Alyssa Bonenberger (Walnutport, PA/Northampton Area) added six points and four assists, while
Kelsey Watson (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) and
Natalya Lee (Feasterville, Pa./Rancocas Valley Regional) both added six points as well.
Kutztown will close out its regular season in a PSAC Eastern Division matchup against rival Bloomsburg University on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at the Nelson Field House at 5:30 p.m.
