KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team will have to wait at least one more game to seal its place in the postseason after it fell to Lock Haven University 70-63 on Wednesday night in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division game from Keystone Arena.
Wednesday night also marked Kutztown's annual recognition of its fall semester Dean's List student-athletes. 95 student-athletes earned Dean's List honors this past semester by earning a 3.6 or higher grade point average (GPA).
The Golden Bears (9-15, 6-8 PSAC East) were playing with a 'win-and-in' mentality against the Bald Eagles (6-18, 4-10). Kutztown and Lock Haven are battling for the final playoff spot in the PSAC Tournament, as KU will need to win one of its final two games, or have Lock Haven lose one of its two games over the next week for Kutztown to clinch a spot.
Over the next seven days, Kutztown is scheduled to host Shippensburg (16-8, 10-4) on Saturday and travel to Bloomsburg (21-3, 12-2) next Wednesday. Lock Haven will travel to Millersville (13-11, 8-6) on Saturday and host Cheyney (4-19, 4-10) next Wednesday.
Kutztown led by two with 6:52 to play, but Lock Haven countered with a game-ending 15-6 run.
Kara Funk (Dover, Pa./Dover)'s three-pointer brought Kutztown within three with 2:02 to play, and Kutztown held the ball down five with 25 seconds left, but was unable to get a shot attempt off in the final seconds.
Most of the game was played within one possession, as a couple of categories played significant factors in the final outcome. Lock Haven won the rebounding margin 35-25, including 12-3 on the offensive glass, which resulted in 15 more shot attempts for the Lady Eagles.
Sophomore
Natalya Lee (Feasterville, Pa./Rancocas Valley Regional) led Kutztown in scoring for the second straight game. She scored 16 points with a career-high-tying seven assists in 40 minutes of action. Freshman
Jess Harvey (Barnegat, N.J./Rumson Fair-Haven Regional) started off hot from the field and finished with 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting including a pair of three-pointers. Junior
Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) rounded out the three double-digit scorers with 13 points to go along with three blocks and a 5-for-5 performance at the free throw line.
Junior
Alyssa Bonenberger (Walnutport, PA/Northampton Area) played all 40 minutes and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds, but finished with just one field goal.
Kelsey Watson (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) chipped in eight points off the bench on 4-of-5 shooting.
Kutztown head coach
Janet Malouf will also have to wait one game to achieve a career milestone. She sits at 299 career wins and looks to be the fifth coach in PSAC history to hit the 300-win mark.
For Lock Haven, Sami Lane scored a team-high 15 points off the bench. Marrysa Moyer and Shaleta Heyward chipped in 10 points apiece.
Saturday's game between Kutztown and Shippensburg marks Kutztown's home-finale and is set to tip at 1 p.m. Shippensburg won the first meeting at Heiges Field House, 86-57.
