KU Game Notes
KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Program history hopes to be made on Wednesday night for the Kutztown University women's basketball team. With a win against Lock Haven University, the Golden Bears would clinch a spot in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament, and head coach
Janet Malouf will earn her 300th career win. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. at Keystone Arena.
The Maroon and Gold (9-14, 6-7 PSAC East) got into this spot after defeating Millersville 77-67 on Saturday.
Natalya Lee (Feasterville, Pa./Rancocas Valley Regional),
Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) and
Alyssa Bonenberger (Walnutport, PA/Northampton Area) combined for 54 points and 27 rebounds in the win, which is the team's third win in four games. Last month, Lock Haven won the first meeting, 66-51.
LAST TIME OUT: The Golden Bears continued their recent offensive surge with a 77-67 win against Millersville at Keystone Arena on Saturday.
Natalya Lee (Feasterville, Pa./Rancocas Valley Regional) (19 pts, 7 reb),
Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) (18 pts, 10 reb) and
Alyssa Bonenberger (Walnutport, PA/Northampton Area) (17 pts, 10 reb) each provided significant contributions in the win. Also of note, the team shot 22-of-25 from the free-throw line in the second half. Kutztown is now 3-1 in its last four games, shooting greater than 45 percent in each victory. With this win, KU needs just one more win or one Lock Haven loss to clinch a spot in the PSAC Tournament.
APPROACHING 300: With Wednesday's win, head coach
Janet Malouf earned her 299th win at Kutztown. In her 20th season, she stands one win away from a career milestone that 39 active Division II head coaches reached in women's basketball. Furthermore, only four coaches in PSAC history earned 300 wins while coaching at an institution in the conference. A three-time PSAC East Coach of the Year, Malouf coached KU to its three winningest seasons in program history.
STATISTICAL ADVIA-TION: Junior forward
Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) took her play to a higher level this season. She earned the program's first ever triple-double on Dec. 7, also setting a school record with 10 blocks in a single game. Campbell blocked 58 shots this season (fifth in KU history) and 108 for her career (sixth in KU history). Also, the junior co-leads the PSAC with 2.9 steals per game. Campbell also averages 10.7 points and 7.7 rebounds per game.
MRS. RELIABLE: Through her three years at KU, junior guard/forward
Alyssa Bonenberger (Walnutport, PA/Northampton Area) started 75 consecutive games and counting. With that, she's become one of the main focal points on offense. Her 10.3 points and 7.4 rebounds per game both rank second on the team, behind
Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape). Her five double-doubles co-leads the team with Campbell. Bonenberger shoots 40.4 percent from the field and 78.4 percent from the line.
BEYOND ELEMENTARY: Freshman forward
Kelsey Watson (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) is playing some of her best basketball of late. She earned PSAC East Freshman of the Week honors for her play against Mansfield and West Chester, but she continued her strong play against Cheyney and Millersville. Over her last five games, Watson averaged 12.8 points and five rebounds per game, shooting 55.3 percent from the field and 75.9 percent from the free-throw line.
PSAC PLAYOFF PICTURE: Kutztown currently holds a 6-7 record in the PSAC East, ranking the team sixth in the division. With five teams already clinching a playoff spot, the Golden Bears need to stay ahead of Lock Haven to earn the final spot from the east in the PSAC Championship Tournament. Kutztown can get no higher than the four seed, but that spot would earn the team a home game in the first round of the tournament, which takes place on March 1.
Looking in the Other Corner: the Lock Haven Lady Eagles
MORE FROM MOYER: Junior forward Marrysa Moyer truly stepped up her game this season. She averages 15.2 points and 9.3 rebounds per game this season, ranking her third in the latter category. In the first meeting against KU, she totaled eight points and nine rebounds, one of only two times she had single digits in both points and rebounds.
DON'T DOUBT DAUGHTERY: Junior guard Emily Daughtery will also provide a major threat offensively, as she averages 13.3 points per game. Daughtery left the first game against Kutztown with a concussion, but returned after missing one game. She has scored in double digits four times in the six games back, averaging 10.8 points per game.
HEY THERE, COACH: Lady Eagles head coach Jennifer Smith is in her seventh season as head coach at the university. A graduate of Millersville University, Smith started her coaching career there as an assistant. Since joining Lock Haven as head coach, the program owns a 49-127 record overall. She previously was head coach at Goldey-Beacom College.
