Video Replay KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University men's basketball team scored the first eight points of Saturday's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup against Millersville University, and never looked back in an 82-71 win at home at Keystone Arena for the team's fourth straight win.
In their previous win at Cheyney on Wednesday night, the Golden Bears (5-3, 3-1 PSAC East) used strong transition play to pull away from the Wolves. On Saturday though, Kutztown utilized a strong half-court offense by constantly moving the ball around and continuing to send one more pass to find the open man.
Kutztown shot 55.6 percent from the field against the Marauders (4-5, 1-3), marking the second straight game KU has made more than half of its shot attempts. Even more impressive, it notched 23 assists on 30 made field goals for KU's first 20+ outing of the year.
"I like how hard we played tonight," head coach
Bernie Driscoll. "Millersville made some good adjustments, and they really started attacking our lighter guards, and credit that to their great coaching. Our guys responded well though, and I think that when we went zone about midway through the second half, the tempo turned back in our favor.
"They are very unselfish players, and I was very happy with the way that they passed the ball," Driscoll continued. "There are even some times that we passed up open shots, but I was very happy with how unselfish they were tonight; I think having five players in double figures and 23 assists illustrates that."
After jumping out to its eight-point lead to open the game, Kutztown never faltered as it never trailed from start-to-finish. KU led by as many as 14 in the second half, but Millersville kept itself in the game and trailed by six with three minutes to go. KU combated the potential comeback bid by making 11-of-13 free throws in the final 6:29 to keep the Marauders at bay.
Five players scored in double figures for Kutztown and combined for 74 of the team's 82 points. Sophomore
Howard Sellars (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area (Saint Peter's)) came off the bench and made his first six shot attempts to guide him to a game- and season-high 18 points. He shot 7-for-10 from the field and 3-for-6 from three-point range after making his first three of the game. He co-led the team with six rebounds while also handing out two assists in 27 minutes.
Sellars has now scored 17+ points in three or his last four games, has scored in double figures in four of the last five, and is now third on the team in scoring at 10.9 per game.
Austin Beidelman (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) posted his best offensive performance of the season with 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting. He was aggressive at attacking the basket, but did most of his damage by finding holes in the Millersville zone and draining the open shot.
Tynell Fortune (Blakeslee, Pa./Pocono Mountain West (California (PA))), the third-leading scorer in the PSAC, scored in double figures for the seventh time in eight games with 16 points on Saturday. He played a significant role in KU's season-high assist mark with a personal season-high seven assists. He swiped three steals and shot 4-for-4 at the free throw line as he continues to lead the team at the free throw line at 85.7 percent.
For the game, KU shot 16-for-19 (.842) at the free throw line. For the season, KU is third in the PSAC at 75.8 percent.
Fortune made two three-pointers to increase his team-high total to 19, and has now scored 960 points and is 40 away from 1,000 in his career.
Josh Johnson (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) finished with 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting and made 5-of-6 free throws with two blocks and two assists in 38 minutes. Fellow forward
Anthony Selby (Jersey City, N.J./Williamstown (Burlington County CC)) scored a season-high 10 points and shot 5-for-8 from the field. He filled the stat sheet with three rebounds, an assist, a block and a steal.
Senior
Tyler Brooks (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) led the game and dished out a career-high-tying eight assists and grabbed six rebounds with four points. He ranks third in the PSAC with a 2.3 assist/turnover ratio.
Millersville also had five double-digit scorers, led by forward Eddie Callender with 15.
Kutztown stands second in the PSAC East at 3-1 through the first four games, behind East Stroudsburg's unblemished 4-0 start.
KU has now won four-in-a-row for the first time since 2012, when it won 10 straight. Next up for KU is Goldey-Beacom College at home on Saturday, Dec. 13 for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
