Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) and
Kelsey Watson (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) attacked the glass on Wednesday and finished with career-high rebounding totals, but the Kutztown University women's basketball team dropped a 70-58 decision at Holy Family University in non-conference action.
Campbell grabbed 17 rebounds, including nine on the offensive end, while finishing with 11 points. She also grabbed four steals.
Watson scored a team-high 12 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds. She also dished out four assists and had two steals.
Watson, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Athlete of the Week, has now scored in double figures in five straight games and six of her last seven. She has also grabbed double-digit rebounds in three of her last four games and is averaging 13.3 points and 12.5 rebounds in her last four games.
Kara Funk (Dover, Pa./Dover) scored a season-high 10 points in 21 minutes off the bench for KU. She shot 4-of-6 from the field with two three-pointers, three assists and a steal.
Poor shooting led to the Golden Bears' (4-6) setback. They shot 25.8 percent from the field (17-of-66) and 54.3 percent at the free throw line (19-of-35), but were able to use a +4 rebounding advantage, including 21 offensive rebounds (five shy of the school-record) to keep them within striking distance for most of the game.
Holy Family (7-6) had four double-digit scorers, led by Jill Conroy's 18 points with a 7-for-7 performance at the free throw line. Erin Fenningham finished with 13 points, Sarah Pawlak notched a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, and Kylie Giedemann scored 10 points with six rebounds and four assists.
The Tigers opened on a 19-5 run to build their first double-digit lead six minutes into the game. KU responded with 11 of the next 13 points to pull within five at 21-16 following a three-pointer by
Jenna Altomare (Pennsylvania Furnace, Pa./State College Area).
Holy Family held a 38-30 lead at halftime, as Kutztown's five-point deficit in the first half was as close as it would get to evening the game against Holy Family.
Kutztown returns to conference crossover action this weekend, and hosts Edinboro and Mercyhurst at Keystone Arena on Jan. 3-4, respectively, with tipoffs set at 1 p.m.
