KUTZTOWN, Pa. – After falling behind in the first half, the Kutztown University women's basketball team made a comeback push in the second half, but could not catch the Edinboro University Fighting Scots as the visiting team secured an 81-69 victory from KU's Keystone Arena on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.
Kutztown (4-7, 3-5 PSAC) and Edinboro (9-3, 6-2) each dealt short runs throughout the beginning of the first half. With 3:50 remaining before halftime and Edinboro holding a 27-20 lead, Valerie Majewski's three pointer initiated a 15-3 run for the Fighting Scots that put the Golden Bears in a 19-point hole.
Brianna Morales (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic (Northampton County Community College)) knocked down a three in the final seconds to regain some momentum for KU heading into the locker room.
Edinboro found its rhythm in the first 20 minutes, shooting 50 percent from the field and 7-for-11 from beyond the arc. The Maroon and Gold were held to 11-for-34 from the field and 3-for-8 from three.
The Golden Bears kicked off the second stanza with a 6-1 run that cut the deficit to 11 and put the home team back in the game. KU chipped away at the Fighting Scots lead and forced a six-point margin with 8:45 remaining. Edinboro responded with a 10-0 run to push the game back out of reach.
With an improvement from the field in the second half, Kutztown finished 28-for-67 (41.8 percent) shooting and 3-for-11 (27.3 percent) from long range. Edinboro shot 28-for-59 (47.5 percent) from the field and 10-for-18 (55.6 percent) on 3-pointers.
The Fighting Scot's 10 made three pointers are the most by the team this season. They currently lead the PSAC in three-point field goal percentage.
Kutztown featured five players scoring in double figures for the first time this season.
Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) led the way with 13 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks on 6-for-9 shooting.
Nicole Donahue (Wall, N.J./St. Rose) provided a spark off the bench in the mid-range game, shooting 6-for-8 from the field to notch 12 points, her highest since the season opener.
Kelsey Watson (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton)'s 11 points extended her streak to six-straight games in double figures, and she led the Maroon and Gold with nine rebounds.
Alyssa Bonenberger (Walnutport, Pa./Northampton Area) went 4-for-5 from the charity stripe to finish with 11 points and added seven boards.
Natalya Lee (Feasterville, Pa./Rancocas Valley Regional) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10. Bonenberger and Lee led the squad with five assists each, while Watson and Lee both snagged three steals apiece.
Laurel Lindsay and Lauren Hippo led the charge with 20 points each for Edinboro, combining for six of the team's three pointers. Lindsay played all 40 minutes of action and dished out a game-high nine assists. Aignee' Freeland recorded the only double-double in the game, finishing with 12 points and 10 boards.
The Golden Bears immediately return to action on their home court tomorrow, Jan. 4th. KU takes on Mercyhurst University at 1 p.m. from Keystone Arena. The two teams have not squared off since the beginning of the 2012-13 season, when KU notched a 70-60 victory.
