Video HighlightsCHEYNEY, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team returned to the win column on Wednesday night with a 74-61 road victory against Cheyney University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup at Cope Hall.
The Golden Bears (3-2, 2-1 PSAC East) were led by
Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape). She turned in her third double-double through five games this season with a game-high 19 points and 11 rebounds. She is well on her to way to surpass her career-high of six double-doubles set last season, as she sits with 13 in her career.
Elisa Gaffney (Downingtown, Pa./Coatesville) scored a career-high 15 points, 10 coming in the first half. She shot an effective 5-of-7 from the field and made five free throws with five rebounds.
Alyssa Bonenberger (Walnutport, Pa./Northampton Area) rounded out Kutztown's three double-digit scorers with 12 points and eight rebounds on 7-of-10 shooting.
Freshman
Kalee Fuegel (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) started her first game of the season Wednesday night. Her physical defensive play ultimately led to her fouling out of the contest, but she filled up the stat sheet with two points, three rebounds and two steals in 11 minutes.
Nicole Donahue (Wall, N.J./St. Rose) scored seven points off the bench and
Kelsey Watson (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) finished with six points, five rebounds and two assists.
After a highly-contested opening 10 minutes in which Cheyney led 25-23 at one point, KU turned the tables and converted at the free throw line while making numerous stops on defense. KU ended the first half on a 17-2 run to open its halftime lead to 44-30.
KU shot 22 free throws in the first half, one less than it had shot in an entire game this season entering Wednesday night. It made 63.6 percent of them at 14-for-22.
The run was extended to 23-2 as the lead was pushed to 50-30 in the opening minutes of the second half, forcing a Cheyney timeout.
After trailing by 20, however, Cheyney responded with a 16-5 run to cut its deficit to 57-48 midway through the second half. KU stood its ground though, maintained its advantage and scored the next seven points to build its lead back out to 16. KU went on to hold a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game.
Kutztown shot 49.1 percent from the field, its best percentage of the season thus far. It only took four three-pointers on the night, but made its mark by going to the free throw line 39 times, despite only making 20. It is KU's most free throw attempts in a game in more than 13 years, dating back to 2001 when it shot 42 against Bowie State.
Cheyney (1-6, 1-2) had three double-digit scorers. Amber Genwright scored 12 points as Aerie DeJesus and Kia Whitley-Duncan each finished with 11. The Wolves shot 32.3 percent from the field including 3-for-12 from three-point range.
The Golden Bears return home on Saturday, Dec. 6 to face Millersville University at Keystone Arena beginning at 1 p.m. The teams split their two meetings last year, including a 10-point KU win at Keystone Arena.
