KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team returned to campus to take on non-conference foe Philadelphia University on Saturday. Turnovers and shooting percentages plagued the Golden Bears in a 72-50 setback at Keystone Arena.
Kutztown (2-2) kept itself within striking distance for most of the game by attacking the basket and converting at the free throw line. KU shot 16-for-19 at the charity stripe, its best output of the season, led by a combined 9-for-12 from
Kelsey Watson (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) and
Elisa Gaffney (Downingtown, Pa./Coatesville) off the bench.
Despite the effective shooting at the line, it did not balance out into improved shooting from the field. KU shot 27.1 percent and 2-for-14 from three-point range. It handed the ball over to Philadelphia 22 times, which led to 28 points off turnovers for the Rams (4-0).
Senior
Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) notched her second double-double in four games this season. She battled foul trouble for most of the game, which limited her to 22 minutes. She finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Watson was Kutztown's other double-digit scorer with 10 points including a 4-of-5 outing at the free throw line. She also grabbed five rebounds with two blocks and two steals in 17 minutes. Gaffney also turned in effective minutes for KU with nine points and 5-for-7 at the free throw line.
Much like the KU men's basketball team was faced with last Tuesday night against the Philadelphia men's team, Philadelphia's women's team primarily used a six-player rotation. It had four double-digit scorers and one 18-rebound performance.
Najah Jacobs scored a game-high 25 points and made 10 of her 11 free throws. She also grabbed six rebounds. Monica Schacker had 15 points and made both of her three-point attempts, and Bria Young handled the ball well and finished with 12 points, seven steals and four assists. Tori Arnao positioned herself well underneath and grabbed a game-high 18 rebounds.
For the game, the Rams shot 38.1 percent from the field and 70 percent from the free throw line with 15 assists to 14 turnovers.
The Golden Bears return to action and to conference play on Wednesday, Dec. 3 at Cheyney University beginning at 6 p.m.
