Photo Gallery KUTZTOWN, Pa. – It was a special day for the Kutztown University field hockey team on Saturday. It celebrated Senior Day for three Golden Bears, earned a much-needed win in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), and head coach
Marci Scheuing can now say she coached her team to a win over her alma mater as KU took down Mansfield University 5-2 at University Field at Andre Reed Stadium.
Pre-game ceremonies were focused around three senior members of the KU field hockey team.
Gabrielle Swart (Coopersburg, Pa./Bridgeway Academy),
Samantha Jacobson (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) and
Rachael Sanders (Fayetteville, Pa./Chambersburg (Limestone)) took part in Senior Day and were accompanied on the field by their parents alongside the KU coaching staff. The KU coaches presented each senior with a bag of gifts, and also recognized Mansfield's senior class by giving each of Mountaineer senior a rose.
The KU-Mansfield series always gets highlighted on Scheuing's calendar. Scheuing was a field hockey player at Mansfield and has long awaited the moment to coach Kutztown to victory over her former team. Saturday was her third shot at Mansfield in her second year at the helm of the Golden Bears, and she can now take that weight off her shoulders with Kutztown's dominant victory.
Kutztown out-shot Mansfield 27-10, including 15-3 in the first-half, and controlled most of the possession. Despite posting its second-highest scoring output of the season, Kutztown had two shots get stopped by defensive saves and one rattle off the post. The teams traded goals within a minute of each other midway through the first half, but the pressure applied by Kutztown was too much for any team to withstand as KU scored four unanswered goals spanning over both halves.
Anna Behm (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) scored her team-leading 13th and 14th goals of the season on Saturday.
Madison Wampler (York, Pa./West York Area) also notched a pair of goals that gave KU a 3-1 lead in the 49th minute. Freshman
Courtney Konowal (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) also scored for the Golden Bears, her third of the year.
All three seniors started for Kutztown, including Sanders in the cage. She made three saves.
Notably, each dressed member of the Golden Bears played in Saturday's victory.
Kutztown ranks sixth in the PSAC standings and continues to march toward its goal of finishing in the top six and sealing a playoff berth. The Golden Bears look to keep moving forward next week, when they take on West Chester University on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m.
