EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – James Wah Jr. (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) and
Terry Williams (West Orange, N.J./Cosby (Phoenix College)) combined for 316 yards, and the defense shut down the league's top offense to highlight the Kutztown University football team's 31-16 road victory over East Stroudsburg on Saturday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) showdown at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
Â
The Golden Bears (4-4, 4-3 PSAC East) were coming off setbacks against not only the top two teams in the conference, but in Division II. The quality of opponent remained high for the third straight week, as the Warriors (6-2, 5-2) entered the game with one loss and one of the most prolific passing attacks in the country.
Â
Wah Jr. posted a career-high 205 rushing yards with an impressive 7.9 average on 26 carries. He is the first Golden Bear to run for 200 yards since Maurice Adams ran for 259 in 2004, and his carries were the most by a KU player since 2009. Wah Jr. also scored two touchdowns including a 42-yarder late in the first half.
Â
The running attack didn't end with Wah Jr., as Williams posted his third 100-yard outing of the season. He ran for 111 yards on 20 carries to mark the second time this season that KU has had two backs run for triple-digit yardage in the same game.
Â
Kutztown's success this season has stood true with its success of the running game. KU has won every game this season in which it runs for at least 100 yards, and also continued its winning trend when holding its opponent to less than 100 yards. Saturday's outing marked Kutztown's best defensive performance against the run this season as ESU finished with -45 yards on the ground.
Â
The defensive unit of the Golden Bears limited East Stroudsburg to less than half of its average offensive production this season. ESU posted 240 total yards and entered Saturday atop the PSAC and fifth in Division II at 527.1 per game. KU only allowed one touchdown with its defense on the field, as ESU managed a field goal and a kickoff return touchdown in its lowest scoring output of the season.
Â
Senior
Sam Dougan (Secane, Pa./Ridley) led the defensive attack with seven tackles, including two for a loss and a sack. He ranks ninth in school history with 259 career tackles.
Â
Jalen Nieves (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) and
English Peay (Philadelphia, Pa./George Washington) each had six tackles, and
Zach Greenwald (Gibbstown, N.J./Paulsboro) inched closer to a career milestone as his two tackles improved his season total to 197. KU tallied a season-high four sacks on the day. Along with Dougan,
Michael Gallagher (Clarksboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional),
Steve Plousis (Philadelphia, Pa./Ridley) and
Eric Condron (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) brought down the ESU quarterback.
Â
Kutztown quarterback
Chad Barton (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) tossed a pair of touchdowns to sophomore receiver
Kellen Williams (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg), including a 74-yarder on the first drive of the third quarter. It is the second time this season the duo have hooked up for a 70+ yard score. Barton threw for 236 yards, 107 of which went to Williams.
Â
Freshman kicker
Alec Rosenfeld (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) opened with a 28-yard field goal to move to 9-for-9 on the season, but missed a 33-yarder later in the second quarter to end his streak of consecutive field goals to open his career. He does however, move into a tie for third place in school history for field goals in a season.
Â
KU has now won four of its last five meetings against the Warriors, and will look to continue to build momentum for its home-finale next week. Kickoff on Saturday, Nov. 1 against Lock Haven University is set for 1:05 p.m. at University Field at Andre Reed Stadium.
