KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Kutztown University drew its largest crowd of the year on Saturday. Prior to the football team's 31-12 setback to 12th-ranked Bloomsburg University, KU's home facility was dedicated in honor of Golden Bear alumnus Andre Reed '05 and renamed to University Field at Andre Reed Stadium.
Â
Saturday concluded a weekend of festivities in honor of one of the newest inductees into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The official dedication occurred during pre-game ceremonies, which was highlighted by the unveiling of "Andre Reed Stadium" on the stadium press box. Reed closed out the ceremony by speaking to the fans in attendance from a podium at midfield.
Â
At a formal reception on campus Friday night, Reed was presented with awards from the Borough of Kutztown, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, and the Kutztown University President's Office.
Â
Following the ceremony, the Golden Bears (3-4, 3-3 PSAC) looked to make an ever-lasting imprint on Andre Reed Stadium against the nationally-ranked Huskies (7-0, 6-0). Known for its successful power-I running attack, Bloomsburg never strayed from the run as its backbone of moving the ball up and down the field. It ran 45 times for 242 yards and a pair of scores.
Â
With KU running for 80 yards, KU continued its season trend of winning every game this season when it runs for 100 yards, and dropping every game when it allows 100 yards.
Â
Kutztown let up a 42-yard TD pass early in the game, but its defense buckled down on numerous possessions in the second half and gave the offense opportunities to close the deficit. However, it took the Golden Bears until the horn sounded at the end of the first half to hit the scoreboard with a 28-yard field goal and stop a 21-point scoring streak by Bloomsburg.
Â
Freshman
Alec Rosenfeld (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) connected again to open the second half, this from 32 yards, to draw Kutztown to within two possessions at 21-6. The defense held its ground and forced a three-and-out the following possession to give KU back the ball with a chance to draw within one score, but KU continued to put itself in lengthy third- and fourth-down conversions that resulted in punts.
Â
Bloomsburg's lead grew to 31-6 before Kutztown's
Anthony Kelly (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) made a phenomenal, leaping one-handed catch over his head in the corner of the end zone to cap the scoring at 31-13 with one second left in the third quarter. The touchdown was Kelly's team-leading ninth of the season and 15th of his career, moving him past Saturday's guest of honor (Reed) and into 11th place in school history.
Â
Top receivers for Kutztown on Saturday were freshman
Nathan Hollander (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) (7 rec., 33 yds.) and
Kellen Williams (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) (6 rec., 84 yds.). Senior
Brett Fox (Laureldale, Pa./Muhlenburg) made one catch and is two away from 100 for his career.
Â
Rosenfeld moved to a perfect 8-for-8 on field goal attempts in his freshman season. He entered Saturday as one of four kickers in Division II and the only one from the PSAC with a perfect field goal percentage.
Â
Defensively, safety
Jalen Nieves (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) attacked the ball carrier and outside screen passes on his way to a game-high 13 tackles. Senior
Sam Dougan (Secane, Pa./Ridley) notched 11 tackles, his second double-digit tackle game of the season and first since Sept. 13 against Indiana (PA), and moved up to ninth in school history with 252 tackles. He is one of nine players in school history to record 250 career tackles.
Â
Fellow linebacker Zachary Delp also had double-digit tackles with 10. Senior
Zach Greenwald (Gibbstown, N.J./Paulsboro) had three tackles and is four away from 200 in his career.
Â
The Golden Bears return to action next weekend, when they travel to East Stroudsburg University (6-1, 5-1) on Saturday, Oct. 25 for a 3:05 p.m. kickoff. The game can be listened to live on the official voice of Kutztown University, KUR at
