KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team returns home after a three-game road stretch in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division to host the Bloomsburg University Huskies on Jan. 25 in a Saturday afternoon a?air at Keystone Arena.
The Golden Bears (6-11, 3-4 PSAC East) lost all three of their road games, including an 86-57 loss at Shippensburg that saw KU allow its most points in a game since early November. Kutztown now owns a 1-8 record in its last nine games. Meanwhile, Bloomsburg (14-3, 5-2) owns an unblemished record since the turn of the calendar, going 7-0 in 2014. The Huskies have yet to lose to a team with a losing record this season.
LAST TIME OUT: The Golden Bears lost at Shippensburg, 86-57, in a road PSAC East game Wednesday night. The loss marked the eighth in the last nine games, and it saw KU struggle from the ?oor in the ?rst half for the second consecutive. Kutztown shot 7-of-27 (25.9 percent) in the ?rst half, but 14-of-33 (42.4 percent) in the second half.
Nicole Donahue (Wall, N.J./St. Rose) led the Golden Bears with 16 points.
Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) added nine rebounds, three blocks and three steals.
STEALS APLENTY: The Golden Bears only collected six steals in Wednesday's loss, but their defense still remains a top threat to create havoc. KU had 10+ steals in 12 of its previous 13 games. This includes a pair of six-game stretches with 10+ steals, both which mark a program best since 1998 (1/31-2/14). Kutztown also set a school record with 22 steals at Mans?eld on Dec. 4. The Golden Bears rank second in the PSAC with 11.41 steals per game, behind only West Chester.
BOARDED UP: If the Golden Bears are looking to improve in one major area, it likely would be the rebounding battle. Kutztown began the season with 144 rebounds in three games, earning a positive rebound margin in each game. Since then, the Golden Bears were outrebounded in 12 of their last 14 games. KU is on average outrebounded 40.6 to 35.4 in that span. For the season, KU owns a 3-2 record with a rebound advantage, but a 3-9 record otherwise (losing the last nine).
PACKS IN THE PSAC: With the PSAC East schedule reaching its midway point this weekend, it looks like neither Bloomsburg nor Kutztown is gaining separation from the pack. The Golden Bears are just one game ahead of Lock Haven and Cheyney (2-5 each in the PSAC East) for the ?nal playo? spot in the division, while they are just one back of East Stroudsburg. Meanwhile, the Huskies are one of three teams at 5-2, putting them one game back of the division lead.
Looking in the Other Corner: the Bloomsburg Huskies
IT'S NO ACT: Perhaps some thought the Huskies would take a step back after they graduated a strong senior class last year. Bloomsburg hasn't dropped a beat, thanks to its senior leader in Catherine Noack. The Bethlehem native averages 16.6 points per game and shoots 51.5 percent from the ?oor (including 45.8 percent from three), make her a major threat at guard.
INSIDE EFFICIENCY: After seeing sparing time as a redshirt freshman last year, forward Adreana Sadowski took to the task of becoming a starter with ?ying colors. Sadowski shoots a blazing 59.1 percent from the ?oor en route to a 14.2 points per game average. The Fleetwood native has shot worse than 40 percent in only one game this season (3-of-8 against ESU).
HEY THERE, COACH: Huskies head coach Bill Cleary is in his sixth season as head coach at the university. Cleary is making his mark in the program, sending the Huskies to the NCAA Tournament in two of the last three seasons. Cleary previous spent time as a head coach at Wilmington University, where he won the ECAC Championship in 2008.
