KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team travels to face the Shippensburg University Red Raiders on Jan. 22 for a Wednesday night battle in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division. Tipoff at Heiges Field House is set for 6 p.m.
The Golden Bears (6-10, 3-3 PSAC East) are trying to reverse a recent cold spell in which the Golden Bears own a 1-7 record in their last eight games. However, Saturday's 66-51 loss at Lock Haven marked the first game during this stretch that the Golden Bears trailed throughout the game. Avoiding the hard luck would also help Kutztown, as they face a Shippensburg team (10-6, 4-2) fresh off a 107-65 victory at Mansfield to end a season-high three-game losing streak.
LAST TIME OUT: The Golden Bears lost at Lock Haven, 66-51, in a Saturday road PSAC East battle. The loss puts Kutztown in a fifth-place tie with East Stroudsburg at 3-3, while Lock Haven joins Cheyney at 2-4, sitting one game out of the PSAC East top six. The Golden Bears trailed the entirety of the game, a first since their loss to 12th-ranked Glenville State. KU had 14 points and 14 turnovers in the first half.
Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) led all scorers with 15 points and eight rebounds.
STEALS APLENTY: With 10 steals on Saturday, Kutztown has double-digit steals in 12 of its last 13 games, dating back to Nov. 20 against USciences. This includes a pair of six-game stretches of 10+ steals, both which mark a program best since 1998 (1/7-1/24 and 1/31-2/14). Kutztown also set a school record with 22 steals at Mansfield on Dec. 4. The Golden Bears rank second in the PSAC with 11.75 steals per game, behind only the 12.71 average for West Chester.
BOARDED UP: If the Golden Bears are looking to improve in one major area, it likely would be the rebounding battle. Kutztown began the season with 144 rebounds in three games, earning a positive rebound margin in each game. Since then, the Golden Bears were outrebounded in 11 of their last 13 games. Fittingly, the last two wins for KU came with positive rebound margins. For the season, KU owns a 3-2 record with a rebound advantage, but a 3-8 record otherwise.
PACK IN THE PSAC: The battle at Shippensburg will mark the seventh of 16 games in the PSAC East schedule. Through the first six games, seven of the nine teams sit within two games of each other in the conference standings. Along with the Red Raiders, both Bloomsburg and Millersville own a 4-2 record in the PSAC East. Meanwhile, along with the Golden Bears, East Stroudsburg owns a 3-3 record. Lock Haven and Cheyney own a 2-4 record.
Looking in the Other Corner: the Shippensburg Red Raiders
GETTING BACK ON THE SHIP: The Red Raiders began the season with a 7-1 record, including a 3-0 mark in the PSAC East. Since then, Shippensburg is trying to reestablish its dominance, owning a 3-5 record. Perhaps Ship achieved that by ending a three-game losing streak with a 107-65 victory at Mansfield. Ship shot 57.1 percent from the field in the win.
DYNAMIC DUO: Sporting arguably the best 1-2 punch in the PSAC East, the Red Raiders are getting more 18 points per game apiece from senior guard Sarah Strybuc (18.9 ppg) and sophomore forward Stephanie Knauer (18.1 ppg). Knauer's 62.9 percent shooting from the field tops the PSAC, while Strybuc's 249 field goal attempts rank second in the conference.
HEY THERE, COACH: Red Raiders head coach Kristy Trn is in her 15th season as head coach at the university. A three-time PSAC East Coach of the Year, Trn owns a 251-163 record with Shippensburg. Including her time as an assistant coach, Trn helped to lead the Red Raiders to three appearances in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight (1996, 1998, 2001).
