KUTZTOWN, Pa.— The Kutztown University field hockey team defeated Bellarmine University 4-1 in a non-conference matchup as part of the Joshua W. Wesner tournament Saturday morning at University Field, giving the Golden Bears their first win of the season under new head coach
Marci Scheuing.
The Golden Bears (2-0) wasted little time getting on the offense securing KU's first goal of the season 13 minutes into action. Senior
Jamie Koenig (Springtown, PA/Palisades) found sophomore
Erin Danner (Marysville, PA/Susquenita) off a corner, giving Danner the opportunity to sweep the ball into the cage.
The Knights (1-1) did not answer back until the second half when an unassisted goal by Alex Ojeda in the 49th minute tied the game.
The Golden Bears showed resilience when senior
Erin Reynolds (York, PA/Central York) sprinted down the field and fired a backhanded shot into the net to lift KU to a 2-1 advantage at 46:17.
Without further delay, another penalty corner was awarded in favor of the Golden Bears, and KU did not hesitate to take advantage of the opportunity. Reynolds' initial shot was deflected off of the Knight's goalkeeper Alex Moro, but the ball was placed perfectly onto the stick of freshman
Jess Strohecker (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry) as she notched her first goal of the season at 52:32 to lift Kutztown to a 3-1 lead.
With less than 10 minutes remaining in the game, Reynolds sealed the victory for the Golden Bears off of an assist by senior
Elly Skinner (Prompton, PA/Honesdale) to strengthen KU's lead to 4-1.
The Golden Bears held the edge in corners 12-10 and held an advantage in shots 19-14. Goalkeeper
Kayla Denlinger (Manheim, Pa./Hempfield) finished the game with six saves.
The Golden Bears return to action when they travel to Slippery Rock University on Saturday, Sept. 14, for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
