KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University field hockey team was crowned the victor of the Joshua W. Wesner Tournament held at University Field this weekend, after a 3-1 win over the Mercy College Mavericks.
It was Kutztown's second match of the day after it already topped Bellarmine 4-1 earlier Saturday morning. The two victories secured the trophy for an ecstatic first-year head coach,
Marci Scheuing, and her team.
Mercy opened up the scoring as Samantha Burke pushed one past KU keeper
Kayla Denlinger (Manheim, Pa./Hempfield) 1in the 18th minute. The Maroon and Gold were not satisfied going into halftime down a goal and capitalized right before the buzzer. Fellow senior captain
Jamie Koenig (Springtown, PA/Palisades) passed it over to Reynolds for an outside rip, however, freshman
Julia Snyder (Red Lion, Pa./Dallastown Area) was able to jump in front and deflect it in to the top netting for her first career goal.
KU came out fast and strong in the second half, as freshman
Megan Tiwold (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) and defensive standout
Erin Danner (Marysville, PA/Susquenita) put away two goals in the first five minutes. Danner had a goal and assist in the first game against Bellarmine, and Tiwold recorded the first goal of her career in the nightcap.
KU outshot the Mavericks 31-11 and dominated penalty corners, 20-5. Denlinger had six saves in the net for the Golden Bears.
The field hockey squad will get a much deserved break this week until it travels to Slippery Rock on Saturday, Sept. 14. The game will begin at 1 p.m.
