SUPPORT THE CAUSE: Head Coach Drew Folmar along with more than 10,000 college coaches will unite with the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) on Saturday, Sept. 28 to participate in the Coach to Cure Muscular Dystrophy game-day charity. The rapidly growing annual effort has raised more than one million dollars to battle Duchenne muscular dystrophy. On September 28th, AFCA members will wear a Coach To Cure MD logo patch on the sidelines and college football fans will be asked to donate to research projects supported by Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD), the largest nonprofit organization in the U.S. focused entirely on Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Football fans can donate to Duchenne muscular dystrophy research by either going online to www.CoachtoCureMD.org or by texting the word CURE to 90999 (a $5 donation will automatically be added to your next phone bill).
Saturday is also West Chester's "Unite For HER". Fans are encouraged to wear pink to Farrell Stadium for Saturday's game. Donations will be accepted at the football game with proceeds going to help fight breast cancer. Kutztown coaches, players, and equipment staff will wear pink gear on Saturday night in support of this cause.
QUICK SIX:
--
Alex Tonnies (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) leads Division II with 14.3 receptions per game.
-- Tonnies' 17 catches against Bloomsburg and Clarion are a school-record.
--
Alec Werner (Harrisburg, PA/Bishop McDevitt) rates second in Division II with 37 completions per game.
--
Alex DiNolfi (Norristown, PA/Norristown) tied his career-high with 13 tackles last week against Bloomsburg.
-- KU will face the top two RB's in DII in back-to-back weeks (1-Quiteh, 2-White)
-- West Chester opened the year with three wins for the first time since 1996.
HEAD COACHES: Drew Folmar is in his first season as head coach of the Golden Bears in 2013, and has directed KU's offense and coached its quarterbacks since 2009. This is Folmar's first head coaching position and makes him the 15th head coach in Kutztown's modern football history.
Bill Zwaan begins his 11th season as head coach of the Golden Rams. Zwaan has won three PSAC Eastern Division titles (2004, 2007 and 2008) while earning Coach of the Year honors each time. In 10 years on West Chester's sideline, Zwaan has masterminded a 80-43 (.650) record. He sports an overall record of 134-57 (.702) in 16 years. His .642 winning percentage ranks sixth all-time at the institution among coaches who spent at least three years in that position.
LAST TIME OUT FOR KUTZTOWN: Alex Tonnies (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) tied his own school-record with 17 receptions on Saturday as Kutztown fell 31-12 to 13th-ranked Bloomsburg in its home opener at University Field. Tonnies' 17 catches tied the school-record he set in the opening week of the season. He was one of two Kutztown receivers with more than 100 receiving yards as the true freshman hauled in 122, one shy of his season-high set at Clarion. Junior
Kodi Reed (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) hauled in 118 yards through the air including a seven-yard touchdown catch on Kutztown's second drive of the game. Freshman quarterback
Alec Werner (Harrisburg, PA/Bishop McDevitt) completed 41 passes, four shy of tying the school-record, for 351 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, senior
Alex DiNolfi (Norristown, PA/Norristown) tallied 13 tackles to tie his career-high set in 2011 against Shippensburg. Juniors
English Peay (Philadelphia, Pa./George Washington) and Sam Dixon-Dougan each had 10 tackles for Kutztown. Peay notched Kutztown's first interception of the season. The Golden Bears ran 18 more plays than the Huskies, but were on the lesser side on total yardage (372-348). Kutztown's defense held Bloomsburg to 239 rushing yards, nearly 200 yards less than its season average. Bloomsburg entered the game as the top rushing team in the nation at more than 420 yards per game.
LAST TIME OUT FOR WEST CHESTER: Rondell White rushed for 227 yards and three touchdowns to lead No. 20/22 West Chester to a 48-3 victory over Millersville at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium on a rainy Saturday night. One week after putting up 612 yards of total offense on Gannon, West Chester bested that effort with 624 yards against the Marauders. The Golden Rams outgained Millersville by a lopsided 624-121 margin, including a school-record 456 yards on the ground. Brandon Monk rushed for a career-high 175 yards on 15 carries and scored a pair of touchdowns. Tight end Tim Brown caught three passes for 89 yards and a score as well. Adam Dempsey caught a touchdown pass for the second straight game. He finished the day with two catches for 19 yards. Quarterback Sean McCartney was 9-of-13 for 168 yards and two TD tosses. West Chester ran the ball a school-record 63 times Saturday night. Mike Labor led all West Chester players with seven tackles, including half a sack. He also forced a fumble. Blaise Schieler finished with six tackles, including four solo stops.
ICE THAT ARM: Alec Werner (Harrisburg, PA/Bishop McDevitt) completed 41 of his 58 passes against Bloomsburg. His completions and attempts are the second-most in a single-game in school history. Werner rates second in Division II with 37 completions per game, trailing Joe Clancy of Merrimack at 37.33.
NOT TOO SHABBY: Freshman
Alex Tonnies (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) brought in a school-record 17 catches on two occasions this season. He broke Terry Robertson's single-game record set against Bloomsburg in 2000. Tonnies then tied his record with 17 catches against Bloomsburg. The PSAC single-game record for receptions is 18, set by Millersville's Chris Pelczarski in 1991.
MOVING THE CHAINS: Of Kutztown's 71 first downs, 49 (69%) have been converted on passing plays, 15 (21.1%) have been by penalty, and just seven (9.9%) have been on rushing plays. On defense, the Golden Bears have only allowed four first downs off of penalties.
PROTECTING THE QB: West Chester is one of four teams in Division II to not allow a sack this season.
TOP TARGET: Alex Tonnies (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) has hauled in 43 catches through three games this season. In 2012,
Colby Tuell (Columbia, PA/Columbia) had 22 catches through his first three games, and led the team with 70 catches in 11 games, good for second in school history.
TOP OF THE CHARTS: Alex Tonnies (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) leads Division II with 14.3 receptions per game. He is the only player in the PSAC and one of five in Division II to average 10 or more catches per game, and is the only freshman in Division II to average more than eight per game.
FAMILIAR WITH REED: Junior receiver
Kodi Reed (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) is second in the PSAC in receptions per game at 7.0. He averages a team-leading 101.3 yards per game and is one of four players in the PSAC to average 100 or more receiving yards.
NEXT UP: Following its game against West Chester, Kutztown returns home for back-to-back home games beginning on Saturday, Oct. 5 against Slippery Rock for Family Day beginning at 1:05 p.m. Kutztown defeated The Rock last year on the road, 56-49.
