WEST LIBERTY, W. Va. – Career days from sophomore
Audrey Stringer (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) and junior
Chelsea Braga (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach (Fairleigh Dickinson)) led the Kutztown University women's volleyball team to a straight-set victory over Charleston Saturday afternoon on the campus of West Liberty.
Kutztown closed out this weekend's Mountain East Conference/Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Co-Host Invitational with a 2-2 record, after Saturday afternoon's 3-1 defeat against host West Liberty University.
Plagued by errors in Friday night's loss to Wheeling Jesuit, the Golden Bears (6-4) produced one of their most efficient attacking matches of the year, tallying 50 kills in three sets and committing only six errors to grab the 3-0 victory over the Charleston Golden Eagles (4-4).
Stringer led the team with 19 kills off of 25 total attacks, committing no errors and posting an attack percentage of .760. Her 19 kills are the most by a Golden Bear since Erin Kissling did the same against Shippensburg in 2011. This is the second match this season where Stringer held an attack percentage above 75 percent.
Freshman
Liama Goodrich (Birdsboro, PA/Daniel Boone) added 13 kills for the Golden Bears. Braga also set a personal career-high in the match, racking up five service aces, while leading the team with 20 digs.
Madison Brake (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) and
Morgynn McKenzie (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle-Antrim) added 15 and 11 digs, respectively. Setter
Anna Conti (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City) dished out 38 assists.
The first set needed extra time to be decided, and after 18 total kills, KU took the first set 31-29. Kutztown continued its effective offense, closing out the final two sets and the match (25-12, 25-13).
After an offensively heavy straight-set victory earlier in the day, the Golden Bears attack was held at bay against West Liberty (5-6).
West Liberty opened up play with two 25-19 wins in the first and second sets. KU battled back in the third, taking the set 25-17 and forcing a fourth set. Although Kutztown produced its best set of the match, the Hilltoppers put away 17 kills, taking the final set and match 25-21.
Stringer and Goodrich led the scoring with 15 and 14 kills, respectively, Conti added 34 assists. The defense was led by Brake, who collected a career-high 21 digs. Fellow freshman McKenzie finished second on the team with 10 digs as Braga added seven more digs and a service ace.
Kutztown will have the week off to prepare until it heads to Erie, Pa. next weekend to open up conference competition. First up is Slippery Rock, scheduled for Friday, Sept. 27 at 2 p.m. followed by Mercyhurst at 7:30 p.m. The squad will then travel from Mercyhurst to Gannon on Saturday, Sept. 28 to square off against Edinboro at 12:30 p.m. and Gannon at 6 p.m.
