KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's soccer team defeated the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Keystone Field, scoring all three goals in the first half of play.
The Golden Bears (3-3, 3-3 PSAC) took the immediate offensive advantage over the Mountain Cats (0-6, 0-6 PSAC) leading to a corner kick by freshman
Megan Frailer (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) in the 11th minute.
Frailer lofted the ball in front of the goal where sophomore
Diana Malanga (Lavallette, N.J./St. Rose) took a touch to set up junior
Hanna Fenstermacher (West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove) for a header and first goal of the game for KU.
Two shots and a header by Malanga later, junior
Sam Costello (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) headed the ball over the Mountain Cat goalkeeper Leeann Gorman, where Frailer beat her to the ball and scored the second goal for KU in the 22nd minute of play.
In the five minutes following, junior
Rubi Mink (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) made a shot on goal, but Gorman saved the ball. Then at 29:49 Mink shot the ball from the left side of the field, 25 yards out, to score the third and final goal for KU.
The first half finished with one more shot on goal by
Kim Nale (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee), and the two teams went to halftime with the Golden Bears in the lead 3-0.
The Golden Bears opened up the second half of play with a series of corner kicks and shots, including two headers by Katelynn Jaxheimer that were saved and blocked by Gorman.
KU maintained the offensive advantage throughout the second half, and continued its high intensity play throughout and won the game 3-0.
The Golden Bears recorded 20 shots, 10 of which were on goal, and did not allow the Mountain Cats any shots. The last time KU did not allow a shot was twice in 2008.
The Golden Bears return to action Friday, Sept. 27, to face Clarion University at Keystone Field for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
