KUTZTOWN, Pa – The Kutztown University field hockey team battled through torrential downpours Saturday night and were unable to take down visiting Mercyhurst University as it suffered a 4-1 setback under the lights at University Field.

The Golden Bears (3-2) scored 15 minutes into the game when senior Jamie Koenig (Springtown, PA/Palisades) swept the ball across the circle and found sophomore Erin Danner (Marysville, PA/Susquenita) who powered it past the Laker goalkeeper to give KU a 1-0 advantage for Danner's third goal of the season.

The Lakers responded with five minutes left to go in the first half. Junior Melissa Faso pushed the ball past the Kutztown goalkeeper to tie the game at 1-1 at the half.

Mercyhurst (3-2) wasted little time in the second half to score its second goal of the night. Junior Allison Brace found the back of the cage in the 52nd minute to lift the Lakers up 2-1. In the 57th minute, the Lakers scored their third goal when senior Meghan Smith flicked the ball over the KU keeper as it trickled past the goal line to give the Lakers a 3-1 lead.

In the final minutes of the game, Mercyhurst was able to put away one more goal in the 64th minute when junior Katlyn Heitzhaus drove the ball into KU's defensive circle and forced the ball past the goalie to give the Lakers the win.

Mercyhurst outshot Kutztown 23-5, and held an advantage in penalty corners 7-4.
Kutztown goalkeeper Kayla Denlinger (Manheim, Pa./Hempfield) registered 12 saves during the game.

Kutztown will return home on Tuesday, Sept. 24 to compete against Bloomsburg University in a non-conference game beginning at 7 p.m.
