SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The sixth-ranked Kutztown University field hockey team suffered its first loss of the season Wednesday evening to top-ranked Shippensburg University by a final of 4-0 on the campus of Shippensburg University.

The Golden Bears (3-1) defense was bombarded by the Shippensburg (5-0) attack early and often, immediately putting KU goalkeeper Kayla Denlinger (Manheim, Pa./Hempfield) to the test. Shippensburg started the match looking like it deserved its recent No. 1 ranking in the latest Penn Monto / National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II Coaches Poll released earlier this week.

Trailing 2-0, the Golden Bears (ranked in the national poll for the first time this season) got their first scoring chance in the final minute of the half. Senior Erin Reynolds (York, PA/Central York) ripped a shot off of an Erin Danner (Marysville, PA/Susquenita) penalty corner. It found freshman Megan Tiwold (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) in front, but her deflection went just wide.

Kutztown found a way to penetrate the defense in the second half, landing five of its six shots on goal. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to get past Shippensburg goalkeeper Careena Neely.

Denlinger ended the game with 10 saves for the Golden Bears. Sophomore Marissa Greiner (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) tallied two defensive saves as Danner and freshman Jess Strohecker (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry) each recorded one. Reynolds finished with three shots and senior Jamie Koenig (Springtown, PA/Palisades) added two more shots on goal.

Kutztown will host Mercyhurst under the lights on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m.
