SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Senior
Erin Reynolds (York, PA/Central York) scored two goals to lead the Kutztown University field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Slippery Rock University on Saturday afternoon in its first road game of the season.
Reynolds scored the opening goal off of a penalty stroke. Her goal gave KU a 1-0 advantage over The Rock in the ninth minute of play.
The Rock answered back when a penalty corner was awarded in their favor, and Gina Smarrelli slipped the ball past sophomore goalkeeper
Kayla Denlinger (Manheim, Pa./Hempfield) to tie the game in the 35th minute and make it 1-1 at the half.
The Golden Bears entered the second half and scored in the 43rd minute when they were awarded another penalty corner, and a confident Reynolds powered the ball past goalkeeper Carlee Dumars to lift KU to a 2-1 lead.
For the season, Reynolds' is KU's top scorer with four goals.
With less than five minutes left to go in the game, The Rock attempted to tie the game for the second time when a shot by Lindsay Brown filtered past Denlinger but was saved by KU's freshman
Jess Strohecker (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry) for her first defensive save of the season.
Denlinger recorded four saves this game in goal.
Kutztown will travel to Shippensburg University on Wednesday, Sept. 18 in hopes of extending its three-game winning streak. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
