SERIES HISTORY: Saturday marks the 10th meeting between Kutztown and California (PA). Kutztown's only loss in the series came last season at University Field in a dramatic 48-45 final when Cal was ranked 10th in Division II and KU was ranked 11th. It was the first meeting between the teams since 1997, a 12-7 Kutztown win. Kutztown and California (PA) played every year from 1990-97 with the Golden Bears winning the last five meetings following a 30-30 tie in 1992. Saturday marks the 2013 home opener for California (PA) after playing against Hillsdale in Michigan last week.
HEAD COACHES: Drew Folmar enters his first season as head coach of the Golden Bears in 2013, and has directed KU's offense and coached its quarterbacks since 2009. This is Folmar's first head coaching position and makes him the 15th head coach in Kutztown's modern football history.
Mike Kellar enters his second season as head coach in 2013, and eighth overall as a member of the coaching staff at Cal U. He previously served as the team's offensive coordinator for five years before serving as the offensive coordinator/associate head coach for offense in 2011. While away from the program in 2009-10, Kellar guided Concord to a 14-8 record as head coach. Prior to his arrival, the Mountain Lions managed only one win in the previous two years and hadn't posted a winning season since 1998.
WEATHER FORECAST: Mostly sunny is expected during the day. The high is set for 70 degrees and the low will be 48, according to weather.com.

LAST TIME OUT FOR KUTZTOWN: Alec Werner (Harrisburg, PA/Bishop McDevitt) hit fellow freshman
Alex Tonnies (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) with the go-ahead touchdown pass with 24 seconds to play in regulation, but a game-tying field goal as time expired followed by a game-winning touchdown and extra-point in overtime gave Clarion a 39-38 victory in the team's season-opener at Memorial Field. On fourth-and-goal with 34 seconds left, Werner tossed a pass into the endzone that was tipped by multiple defenders and brought in by Tonnies while falling to the turf for the go-ahead score.
Michael Gallagher (Clarksboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional) blocked Clarion's potential game-tying field goal on first down, but the fumble was recovered by Clarion with one second remaining to give it another shot at the tie. From 45 yards out, freshman Phil Esposito connected on the field goal to send the game to overtime. Kutztown needed four plays in the overtime period to find the endzone off an 11-yard pass from Werner to
Kodi Reed (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic); however, it failed the two-point conversion and left the door open for Clarion. The Golden Eagles capitalized on its final opportunity as they rushed three times for a touchdown and the game-winning extra point.
LAST TIME OUT FOR CALIFORNIA (PA): Sophomore quarterback Cody Schroeder threw three second-half touchdowns, including the game-winning score with 50 seconds left, as the Vulcans posted a 22-19 season-opening victory over Hillsdale (Mich.) at Frank "Muddy" Waters Stadium on Saturday night. Schroeder finished the game with three touchdowns and a career-high 270 passing yards on 26-of-37 attempts. After the Vulcans were held scoreless in the first half, he completed 20-of-27 attempts for 208 yards over the final two quarters. Schroeder, who was making his fifth career start, connected with eight different receivers in the victory. Defensively, senior Dewey McDonald tied his career-high with 15 tackles (nine solo) in his Cal U debut. Fellow defensive backs CJ Townes and sophomore Rodney Gillin each added seven stops, while linebackers Branko Busick and Brian Justice both registered 2.0 TFL and 1.0 sack.
