SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore pitcher Dominique Ficara (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional (Hofstra)) pitched a complete game shutout for the Kutztown University softball team as her terrific performance combined with some timely hitting led Kutztown to a 5-0 victory over Bloomsburg University on Saturday afternoon in the second round of the NCAA Atlantic Regionals at Shippensburg University.

The Golden Bears (31-21) have won eight in a row and advance to the championship game of the Atlantic Regional 2 bracket on Sunday, May 12 at 3 p.m. Kutztown will need to lose twice to be eliminated on Sunday since it has not yet surrendered a game in tournament play.

With a win, Kutztown would earn a trip to the Atlantic Super Regionals on May 17-18 with a trip to Salem, Va. for the NCAA National Championship on the line.

Ficara was lights-out on the mound as she never let the Huskies (31-18) get into a rhythm at the plate. In seven innings, she allowed just four hits with five strikeouts and no walks.

After three scoreless innings to start the game, senior catcher Katie Lynch (Willow Street, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg) singled up the middle to start the fourth and was sacrificed to second by Colleen Smith (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip (Hofstra)). Senior Maria Isgro (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) got ahold of a low fastball on an 0-2 count and drove it into the gap in left center field to score Lynch and give the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead.

Still holding a one-run advantage in the sixth, Kutztown broke the game open with four runs off Bloomsburg starter Cait Paine, all coming with two outs. Senior Brianna Knipe (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) singled to score pinch-runner Rachel Lawes (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) from second and give Kutztown two runners in scoring position. On an 0-2 count, freshman Lindsey Kelley (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) hit a line drive to left field that hit the top of the wall, bounced in the air and off the top of the wall a second time, and finally went over the fence for a three-run home run to open the lead to 5-0.

Ficara came in to pitch the seventh and retired the Huskies in order to pick up her 15th win of the season.
