KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's lacrosse team fell to No. 14 Mercyhurst University 18-4 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup Friday afternoon at Keystone Field.
The Golden Bears (2-6, 1-3 PSAC) divided four goals between
Kelsey Hogan (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape),
Krystine Beodeker (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley),
Cara Lord (Media, PA/Penncrest), and
Brittany Heimbach (Reading, PA/Exeter), while
Katie Feairheller (Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) and
Morgan Harris (Mantua, NJ/West Deptford) accounted for one assist each.
The Lakers opened the game with three unanswered goals before KU made an impact in Harris causing a turnover leading to Lord scoring the first goal for KU six minutes into the first half.
MU struck again, but the Golden Bears retaliated when Boedecker connected on an assist by Feairheller to score the second goal for KU with 18:03 remaining in the first half to take the score to 4-2.
The Lakers then held the offensive advantage with seven unanswered goals, but KU recuperated with Hogan scoring the third goal for the Maroon and Gold on a free position shot to send the teams to halftime with the Lakers in the lead 11-3.
Throughout the second half of play, Mercyhurst controlled the field with seven unanswered goals until Heimbach scored the fourth and final goal for KU on an assist from Harris with 7:26 left in the second half. The Golden Bears then held the Lakers off the clock for the final 7:26.
Gina Carmina (Flanders, NJ/Mt. Olive) led KU in the open field with three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Three players netted a hat-trick for the Lakers (Rebecca Himes, Kayla Minner, and Anna LeGrett). Rebecca Muscella picked up the win in goal with four saves.
Kutztown returns to action on Saturday, April 6 when it hosts Gannon University in a PSAC game at Keystone Field beginning at 3 p.m.
