KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University softball team takes on Shippensburg University in a crucial Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup on Tuesday, April 23 at North Campus Field. The doubleheader begins at 2:30 p.m.
SENIOR DAY: The Kutztown University softball will honor the 2013 senior class today for Senior Day. Four seniors, all starters, will be spotlighted today for their great hard work and dedication as student-athletes at KU.
Brianna Knipe (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) will finish her career as a four-year starter who hit over .300 and played shortstop. She also stands out this year as a vocal leader. Outfielder
Maria Isgro (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) also is a four-year starter. She hit a career-best .308 and 5 HR in 2011 as a sophomore.
Katie Lynch (Willow Street, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg), another four-year starter, plays catcher for the Golden Bears. She earned PSAC East Freshman of the Year honors in 2010 with a .348 batting average, 6 HR and 41 RBI. Lynch hit 12 HR and 42 RBI last year.
Nicole Henninger (Reading, PA./Muhlenberg) starts for her third season. She bounces back after missing all but one game last season. Henninger hit .342 with 16 HR and 49 RBI in 2011.
LAST TIME OUT: Kutztown split a crucial PSAC East doubleheader last Friday at North Campus Field, losing Game 1 and winning Game 2 against Millersville. After giving up an unearned run in the seventh, the Golden Bears lost 1-0 in the front end of the twin billing. However, KU bounced back in the second half with a 5-2 win. With the split, Kutztown stands three games ahead of MU with four conference games left. The Golden Bears remain in second place in the PSAC East.
REMATCH TIME: KU and Ship lock horns in a rematch of the March 30 doubleheader sweep suffered at the hands of the Red Raiders. In Shippensburg, the Golden Bears were shutout 4-0 in the first game by Emily Estep. The Red Raiders then walked off in Game 2 with a 2-1 victory. However, the Golden Bears can get their revenge by taking the division lead with a sweep today.
THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME: With Friday's split, KU now owns a 11-3 record in games played at North Campus Field. The homestand seems to have helped the Golden Bears back to their winning ways, when they started 9-2 on the season. More importantly, Kutztown lost only one conference game at home so far, with only two such games left. Kutztown's 14-game home stand became 16 games after Saturday's postponed games against Edinboro. The stand ends today.
THEY FOUGHT THE LAWES, AND THE LAWES WON: Head coach
Judy Lawes is quickly approaching history at KU. With 797 career wins, she needs only three wins to become the 19th coach in NCAA Division II softball to reach the 800-win plateau. This makes it a great possibility that the Golden Bears earn their coach her 800th win as the regular season concludes Friday at East Stroudsburg. Lawes began her KU coaching career in 1988. She's led the Golden Bears to 40+ wins in each of the last six seasons. Kutztown reached the NCAA Tournament 16 times under Lawes, including each of the last 13 seasons and Division II national semi?nals appearance in 2012.
