KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Sophomore Dominique Ficara (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional (Hofstra)) of the Kutztown University softball team pitched her seventh shutout of the season on Tuesday afternoon in a 3-0 victory over Dominican College in the first game of a doubleheader at North Campus Field. Kutztown dropped the nightcap 8-0 in six innings.

Ficara had two strikeouts and allowed eight this in the game one win for the Golden Bears (22-18). The shutout marks her seventh of the season to tie for the lead in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).

Junior infielder Morgan Booth (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) went 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored in the opener. She also made five fielding assists at second base with no errors.

Kutztown struck first with a run in the first inning. With two outs and runners on the corners, junior Colleen Smith (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip (Hofstra)) attempted to steal second base but stopped midway to draw a throw by the Charger catcher. After the throw was made, Booth took off for home from third and slid underneath the tag to score.

The game remained at 1-0 up until the sixth inning. Kutztown loaded the bases with a Dominican (21-17) fielding error, a single by Booth, and a walk. Smith walked in a run, and Maria Isgro (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) singled to left field to give Kutztown a 3-0 advantage. The Golden Bears could have tacked on more runs with the bases loaded and one out, but the Chargers forced an infield fly and a groundout to end the inning.

Booth's two hits accounted for nearly half of Kutztown's hits in the opener (five).

For Dominican, Ashley Corrao went 3-for-3 at the plate, and pitcher Elizabeth Hogan threw six innings and allowed two earned runs.

In the nightcap, it was all Dominican as Kutztown could not plate a run. The Chargers struck first in the second when a single that got past the Kutztown right fielder and scored the runner from first. Charger pitcher Delaney Childers helped her own cause with a two-run home run in the third to give Dominican a 3-0 lead.

Kutztown had runners in scoring position with less than one out in the third and fourth innings, but flied into two double plays as the lead runner was thrown out on both of the plays.

Leading 5-0 in the sixth, Dominican hit a line drive that was misplayed and went over the Kutztown center fielder's head for a two-run triple. An infield groundout the next at-bat scored Dominican's eighth run.

Along with Booth's multi-hit game, Jackie Hetzler (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) and Isgro also went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Golden Bears. Kutztown tallied seven hits in the nightcap.

The top three Chargers in the lineup had multi-RBI games, and four players had multi-hit games. Childers picked up the shutout victory with six innings of work without any strikeouts or walks.

The Golden Bears await the first NCAA regional rankings to be released on Wednesday before returning to action at home on Friday, April 19 against Millersville University beginning at 2:30 p.m.
