KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University softball team split a pair of games with Indiana University of Pennsylvania Saturday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader at North Campus Field. Kutztown fell in game one 5-3, and won game two 7-2.

The Golden Bears (19-17) fell short of scoring opportunities in game one against the Crimson Hawks (18-11) with three runs off four hits in the first inning, but remained scoreless there after. KU turned up the heat in game two, however, working the bases loaded in the first inning to take an early 3-0 lead.

GAME ONE

IUP plated five runs in the first inning that ultimately proved to be enough to pick up the game-one victory. It tallied four hits, one for extra bases, to score its five runs, all coming with one out.

Kutztown responded and scored in the first inning when Colleen Smith (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip (Hofstra)) singled to score Morgan Booth (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg). Following Smith's at-bat, Nicole Henninger (Reading, PA./Muhlenberg) had the third hit for KU to score Lynch.

Maria Isgro (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) sacrificed to right field for Smith to score the third and final run for KU in the bottom of the first.

Despite two hits and one IUP error in the bottom of the fifth, the Golden Bears could not plate another run.

KU pitcher Dominique Ficara (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional (Hofstra)) pitched her sixth consecutive complete game with seven innings of work. She had four strikeouts, and allowed six hits.

GAME TWO

The Golden Bears set the tone of the game in the first inning with three runs and hits. Smith singled to left field to score Hetzler, and Brianna Knipe (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) doubled to right field to score Smith and Isgro, giving KU the 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, Booth reached on an error to score Danielle Sienko (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter) for a 4-0 lead. Booth also had a hit in the bottom of the fourth on a double to right field to score Sienko taking the score to 5-1.

IUP did not score its first run until the third inning, and not again until the sixth with a walk and a passed ball to score.

A passed ball scored Kutztown's Rachel Lawes (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) in the bottom of the fifth and Lynch flied out to center field to score Hetzler in the bottom of the sixth to win the game 7-2.

KU pitcher Mary Kociencki (Columbia, N.J./Sparta ) pitched the complete game, allowing only six hits with four strikeouts.

The Golden Bears return to action tomorrow Sunday, April 14 for a PSAC match up against West Chester beginning at noon at North Campus Field.
