SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Kutztown University softball team dropped a pair of games to Shippensburg University Saturday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) contest at Robb Field.

Game One

The Raiders struck first in the bottom of the fourth inning with a triple and a Kutztown throwing error to take a 2-0 lead. A hit by pitch followed by a single through the left side by Jessie Trammell in the bottom of the fifth sent the game to the finish with SU winning 4-0.

Shippensburg pitcher Emily Estep picked up the win (8-2) with 12 strikeouts and one walk, allowing only two Kutztown hits in game one, KU's lowest output of the season.

Senior catcher Katie Lynch (Willow Street, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg) had Kutztown's first hit of the game in the top of the fifth.  Golden Bear pitcher Mary Kociencki (Columbia, N.J./Sparta ) (6-7) was tagged with the loss allowing four runs, three earned, and four walks.

Game Two

The first three innings remained scoreless, but the Raiders had their first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth from a single to right field by Taylor Weisman. KU responded with a run in the top of the fifth when Brianna Knipe (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) hit an RBI single up the middle, scoring Jessica Kurtz (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove).

In the top of the sixth with Shippensburg having runners on second and third, KU pitcher Dominique Ficara (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional (Hofstra)) induced a lineout then back-to-back groundouts to keep the SU runners from scoring.

Kutztown dropped the decision however, in the seventh inning when the Raiders' Rachel Shumway hit a pinch-hit, walk-off single with one out to score Emmie Burke who doubled to lead off the inning.

Ficara (5-6) was tagged with the loss allowing two runs and one walk. Shippensburg pitcher Emily Estep (9-2) picked up the win with 0.1 innings of relief in the seventh inning. Ship starter Makenzie Lynn pitched 6.2 innings and allowed only three hits and one run with four strikeouts.

The Golden Bears return to action when they travel to Georgian Court University Wednesday, April 3 for a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m.
