Kutztown Closes Spring Break Trip with Loss to Merrimack

CLERMONT, Fl. – The Kutztown University softball team wrapped up its spring break trip Saturday with a 2-1 setback to Merrimack at Hancock Park.
 
Saturday's game was filled with home runs from both sides. Merrimack struck first with a solo home run in the bottom of the first from Tawny Palmieri. It also got a home run from Jaclyn Giovannini in the third to give Merrimack a 2-0 lead.
 
Kutztown tallied six hits in the game, one of which a solo home run from Maria Isgro (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) in the sixth to cut the deficit to 2-1. KU was unable to put a runner in scoring position for the remainder of the game.
 
Dominique Ficara (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional (Hofstra)) pitched 5.2 of the six innings after relieving Mary Kociencki (Columbia, N.J./Sparta ) in the first inning. She allowed five hits and struck out four batters.
 
Merrimack's Valerie Bauer pitched a complete game and struck out eight batters.
 
The Golden Bears return to action on Friday, March 29 for a doubleheader at West Chester in its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division opener beginning at 2:30 p.m.
