CARY, N.C. – The Kutztown University baseball team had five pitchers combine for a no-hitter Tuesday afternoon in a 13-0 victory in the second game of a doubleheader against Shaw University. Kutztown swept the doubleheader with an 11-4 victory in the first game at the USA Baseball Complex in Cary.
Senior
Tom Neely (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan), sophomore
Dave King (Tremont, PA/Minersville), senior
J.R. Seader (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway/ Maryland-Baltimore County), sophomore
Karl Von Kiel (Macungie, PA/West Mount), and freshman
Ryan Clow (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East) teamed to shut down the Bears and build momentum heading forward. The quintet went the first five innings without a blemish until it issued a walk in the sixth and seventh innings. It retired the first 13 batters.
The no-hitter was the first for the Golden Bears (8-4) since Nate Reed threw a seven-inning no-hitter against Bloomsburg in 2010.
Game One
Brandon Martinez (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) went 4-for-4 at the plate in the opener and was one of four Golden Bears with two or more RBI.
Ricky Gorrell (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford),
John Dockins (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson (Frederick CC)), and
Joe Peters (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown (Delaware Technical CC)) all had multi-hit games and
Carson Baker (Lehman, PA/Lake-Lehman (Lackawanna)) used a bases-clearing triple to notch a game-high three RBI.
The starting pitching controlled the opening two innings of game one. Senior
Brandon Shurr (Bernville, PA/Schuylkill Valley) pitched the first four innings for Kutztown and besides letting up a triple that led to a run in the third inning, was flawless. Shaw held a 1-0 lead after three but had no idea just how strong Kutztown was about to respond.
The Golden Bears scored six runs in the fourth, all with two outs. With Peters and
Brandon Hickey (Mountville, PA/Hempfield) in scoring position, Dockins gave Kutztown a 2-1 lead with a two-run triple down the left field line.
Martinez reached on a bunt single to put runners on the corners the following at-bat. Gorrell then drove in Dockins with a single through the left side to build the lead to 3-1. An error on Shaw's third baseman opened the door and gave Kutztown the opportunity to add some insurance runs. With the bases loaded and the runners moving on contact, Baker hit a bases-clearing double to left center field to give Kutztown a 6-1 lead through four.
The teams traded runs in the fifth and sixth innings, which provided for an exciting seventh inning. Mainly on singles, Kutztown plated four run in the seventh to take an 11-2 lead. Martinez and Gorrell each tallied RBI singles, and
Ricky Devlin (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) also picked up an RBI in the inning.
Shaw scored two in its final at-bat, but the nine-run cushion was more than enough for Kutztown to lock down the victory.
Shurr allowed three hits in four innings on the mound to pick up the win. He had a season-high three strikeouts while walking three.
Billy Felo (Dauphin, PA/Central Dauphin/Chesapeake College) relieved Shurr in the fifth and allowed two hits for one run in two innings. He also had three strikeouts.
AJ Williams picked up the loss for the Bears. He threw a complete game and allowed 13 hits as seven of the 11 runs were earned. He notched six strikeouts and four walks.
Game Two
Kutztown's hitting and pitching were top-notch in the nightcap. If it were not for the stellar pitching, Kutztown's 13 runs through the first three innings would have been enough.
After a scoreless first frame, the Golden Bears scored eight runs in the second. Their first two runs came off a Shaw error and passed ball, senior
Brett Hauck (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown) hit an infield single to make it 3-0, and senior catcher
Matt Albaugh (Hatfield, PA/North Penn) hit a three-run double to stretch the lead to six. Martinez hit a two-run double to score Albaugh and
Todd Rubendall (Collegeville, PA/Methacton) to close out the scoring in the second.
The Golden Bears scored four more in the third as Albaugh hit an RBI single, Rubendall drove a two-run double, and Clow hit a sacrifice fly.
King took over for Neely in the third and struck out the side and retired the side in the fourth.
Kyle Stoudt (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) closed out the scoring in the nightcap with an RBI single in the fourth to give Kutztown the 13-0 lead.
Von Kiel struck out the side with a walk mixed in between in the sixth inning. Clow came in to close the game and despite walking and hitting a batter, kept the Bears off the board and without a hit to secure the no-hitter.
Five Golden Bears had multi-hit games, led by Albaugh's 2-for-3, four-RBI game. Combining both games, Martinez went a perfect 6-for-6 while adding two more RBI to his total in game two.
The Golden Bears close out their brief spring break trip at Barton on Wednesday, March 20 for a single game beginning at 2 p.m.
