SALISBURY, N.C. – The Kutztown University baseball team battled its way within a run, but a four-run second inning by 14th-ranked Catawba was insurmountable by Kutztown as it fell 9-5 Monday afternoon in non-conference play.

Senior catcher Matt Albaugh (Hatfield, PA/North Penn) led the Golden Bears (6-4) with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate. Sophomore Brandon Martinez (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with two RBI. Kutztown tallied 10 hits as a team.

Catawba (21-7) jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the second inning off Kutztown starter Jason Henderson (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone). Dylan Richardson hit a two-RBI single to put the Indians on the board. Keaton Hawks had an RBI groundout in the inning and Chris Dula hit an RBI double to left center field to give Catawba the 4-0 lead.

Henderson responded with an impressive 1-2-3 third inning to give Kutztown an opportunity to cut into the deficit in the top of the fourth. KU loaded the bases with one out from singles by Kyle Stoudt (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights), Albaugh, and Thomas Romano (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville).

Junior shortstop John Dockins (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson (Frederick CC)) drove in Kutztown's first two runs of the day with a two-run double to center field scoring Albaugh and Carson Baker (Lehman, PA/Lake-Lehman (Lackawanna)), who reached on a fielder's choice. Martinez cut the deficit to one (4-3) with a sacrifice fly to plate Romano.

Hawks countered Kutztown's three-run inning with a three-run homer in the bottom half of the inning to stretch Catawba's lead back to four (7-3). The teams traded runs in the fifth including an RBI double from Baker to score Stoudt for the Golden Bears.

Catawba plated a run in the sixth off a home run by Garrett Furr, and Kutztown's Martinez drove in an RBI single in the eighth to close out the scoring Monday afternoon.

Kutztown used five pitchers as its bullpen allowed just two of the nine runs. Damon Valloreo (Vincentown, N.J./Burlington CCC) relieved Henderson in the fourth and allowed one run in two innings on the mound. Connor Wing (West Chester, PA/Unionville) and Matt Swarmer (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) split the final two innings and did not allow a hit or run.

Catawba's Cameron Cockman picked up his fourth win of the season with 6.2 innings of work. He allowed nine of Kutztown's 10 hits and struck out two batters.

The Golden Bears return to action tomorrow, Tuesday March 19 when they travel to Shaw University for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
