Kutztown Falls to First Place Huskies

Box Score

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – As the Golden Bears looked to play spoiler for Bloomsburg's Senior Day, they ran into a surging Huskies squad looking to earn their third consecutive PSAC Eastern Divisional crown. Bloomsburg continued their momentum with a dominant performance, led by their storied quartet of seniors.

Despite 15 points off the bench from Tanejha Smith (Allentown, PA/William Allen), Kutztown (14-11, 12-9 PSAC) fell to Bloomsburg (20-5, 16-5) at Nelson Fieldhouse, 75-53. Huskie seniors Alyssa Flanagan and Kayla Oxenrider led the way in the victory with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Bloomsburg earns the season sweep over Kutztown and their seventh consecutive win over the Golden Bears. Overall, the Huskies own a five-game winning streak heading into their regular-season finale.

The performance sent Oxenrider, Flanagan, Lauren Ellis and Dana Wieller out in winning fashion for their home regular season careers at Bloomsburg. Ellis struggled with a foul trouble and finished with five points and four rebounds. Wieller, who first 31 points in the first meeting against the Golden Bears, tallied seven points and four rebounds.

Three Golden Bears scored in double digits in the loss. Beyond the 15 from Smith, Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) scored all 12 of her points in the second half, while Alyssa Bonenberger (Walnutport, PA/Northampton Area) tallied her 11 points exclusively in the first stanza.

The Huskies shot 16-of-28 (57.1 percent) from the floor in the first half to build a 43-26 lead at break. Flanagan and Oxenrider combined for 19 points in the first stanza. Meanwhile, the Golden Bears shot 9-of-24 (37.5 percent) in the first half despite a 11 points from Bonenberger.

The game started with the swapping of scoring runs. After Bloomsburg scored the first eight points, Kutztown countered with nine consecutive points to grab a 9-8 lead. Unfortunately, Bloomsburg fought back with a 21-4 run to grab a 16-point lead (29-13). Kutztown trailed throughout after the run.

Despite Bloomsburg beginning the game the first nine of 10 rebounds, KU outrebounded the Huskies, 35-33. The total included 13 on the offensive side. Unfortunately, the Golden Bears lost the turnover battle, 30-25. The Huskies scored 33 points off turnovers.

The Golden Bears next play at Mansfield, Wednesday night at 7:30pm, in their regular season finale. Coverage of the game can be heard on the Golden Bear Network on kubears.com.
